5.0 out of 5 stars Does a great job!
I have the plastic jar $25 version and I was going to buy another for my Boston apartment, but I thought I'd splurge the extra [money] (big spender, I know) and get this one instead. I'm glad I did, this blender is fantastic. I have plastic jar version in my apartment in Montreal, and it just plain sucks, the jar cracked three weeks into having it and it can hardly cut...

1.0 out of 5 stars Replacement Parts Are Hard To Come By!
I bought one about a year ago. The blade locked up and couldn't be fixed. I looked online to order a new blade. The blade was $12.99, but the shipping was almost $30.00. For that price, I can buy a new one. And it won't be a Hamilton Beach. If you want ice crushing, don't buy this blender. Heck, just don't buy this blender.

I'm glad I did, this blender is fantastic. I have plastic jar version in my apartment in Montreal, and it just plain sucks, the jar cracked three weeks into having it and it can hardly cut through my morning smoothy. But this blender is far more effective and does a great job of everything I put it through, i.e. pureéing parsnips and carrots (a great recipe off of canadianliving.com, I highly recommend trying it for thanksgiving). Definetly skip the plastic 10-speed and get this one. It's a far better product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy and Long Lasting, Despite What Others Have Said!, January 24, 2003

I received this blender as a gift almost 8 years ago, and it's still going strong. I have never had to sharpen the blades, it has never emitted sparks, the glass jar has never cracked or chipped, and I count it as one of the most dependable appliances I have! The lid is a little stained from years of constant use -- I make smoothies, blend soups, puree vegetables, and make milkshakes mostly -- but the base is still white (occasional scrubs with Soft Scrub work wonders!). The only problems are that the low speed settings are not much different from each other (the high speed ones are noticeably different) and that if you fill the blender jar too much and then turn on a high speed, the liquid might bubble up through the little add-in cap in the lid (messy and painful when it's a hot soup you're pureeing!). But I am very pleased with this product and would highly recommend it, despite what some of these other reviewers have said.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good all-purpose blender, July 25, 2001

My grandmother's ancient Oster blender still worked, but I had trouble pureeing and then removing small amounts of food for my baby with it. Half the food would get stuck under the blades. So, I took that one to work for smoothies (mmmm) and decided to try this one.

It's been great. Rather to my surprise, it is much easier to empty completely and clean, and the shape of the bowl means that it does a better job of getting all the contents into the blades without help from a spatula. I use it for pureeing fruits and vegetables, for grinding rice, and for making tofu-based smoothies. Because it is so much easier to use than the other, I find that I do more blending.

The first few times I used it, I got a little "new motor smell", but that went away. It seems to do well even grinding for several minutes - which is more than I can say for my little mini-prep processor.

I agree with the other low reviews below. After one use, the blender started smoking, smelling funny, and then quit altogether. I originally was sold on the cheaper price, but I will definitely be upgrading to a blender with power.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment!, March 23, 2001
By A Customer
My sister & I both purchased this on sale about a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. After using it several times it would start smoking and we would have to shut it off and allow it to cool off before restarting it. Sometimes you could also see sparks in the back of the motor. I sent mine back once and my sister twice! My sister has since given up and bought another brand. I'm currently shopping around for a different brand before it burns the house down!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse than lousy: buy another brand, June 3, 2002
By A Customer
This blender is a joke. The blade went dull after only
one week of use, and the blade would not hold an edge at all. It
literally could not be sharpened again, even with the best tools.
On top of that, the motor is burning out after only 2 months.

My first belnder was a Hamilton Beach that was fabulous. This
blender is serious garbage. I will definately never buy a Hamilton Beach product ever again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Died after only one month, August 12, 2001

I only used this blender for one month before it died (and actually only used it maybe 8 times during that month). I am not very impressed with the quality of this model. I would suggest looking at another brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fed up after a week, July 13, 2005

We bought this blender after the motor burned out on our old one. There was a really simple recipe for fruit smoothies that came with this blender so we tried it out. We put in the strawberries, bananas, milk, and yogurt and turned it on. Two minutes later, the motor is still spinning but nothing happens. You can smell the motor burning up but nothing is mixing inside the blender. We've tried putting the ingredients in in different orders, but the results are always the same. Nothing will happen until you use the big plastic stick they give you to push things around. That's just irritating. What good is a blender if you have to constantly push the contents around with a stick to get it to blend?

Bottom line - we're at Amazon looking for a new blender and the garbage man can have this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars lasted awhile but is a hazard now!, October 25, 2002

I have had my blender for quite a while and have used it almost daily for everything from soups to frozen smoothies. The glass jar is sturdy and easy to clean. The 14 speed thing is a joke - they all seem to generate the same amount of power. We had been noticing sparks coming from the underside of the blender about 2 months before it started making an odd humming noise, even when turned off. And then we'd see an sinister red glow in the motor chamber - we haven't used it since and are looking for a new one. What is the average lifespan of an average blender? 3 years? I have no idea, really. This one has been good for the time I have had it and was a nice price, but here I am looking for another one...
