Want a milkshake?, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 65110 Eclectrics All-Metal Retro Drink Mixer, Sterling (Kitchen)
I worked in an old-fashioned drug store during high school. I have wanted my own milkshake maker ever since. This is a fantastic product. The shakes turn out just like they used to at work. I love that the motor is powerful enough to handle thick shakes and freezes. The spindle is very sturdy and allows for moving the cup around to get the perfect blend. I use the same formula for my creations that I learned at work - 3 scoops of ice cream and just enough liquid for desired thickness. I have had no problem with splash over. Extra cups are $9.99 from the manufactuer.
I would definately purchase this mixer again.

Old Fashioned Malteds, May 10, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 65110 Eclectrics All-Metal Retro Drink Mixer, Sterling (Kitchen)
This machine is great. The unit is all metal and it matches my stainless steel appliances and looks great on the kitchen counter. I was looking for a machine that would make a true old fashioned malted shake. This machine delivers, it fluffs up the ice cream and milk, to make a thick smooth milk shake. I do not like fast food shakes that are so thick it is impossible to drink through a straw. I am not sure what the other reviewer is doing wrong, but there is no grinding noise and the unit does not stall or splash. There is no reason to move the cup once it is mixing. You must make sure you follow the directions and not put too much liquid in the cup, past the fill lines. If you like old fashioned milk shakes, this is what you need. I have not found any blender that can mix a true malted shake like this does. I was born in 1960, and this machine makes the shakes that I would get from the local candy store counter.

Stirring rod doesn't come off for cleaning., January 26, 2011
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 65110 Eclectrics All-Metal Retro Drink Mixer, Sterling (Kitchen)
I mix up the powdered Slim Fast for breakfast every morning. I had the cheap version of the mixer and it started to self destruct. The stirring rod was falling into the cup when I turned it on. This one seems much better. A bonus is that it's much quieter than the cheap one.
The good news is that the stirring rod will never fall into the drink. The bad news is that I can't take the rod off. The old one was handy in that I could lower the cup, remove the rod and take the rod to the sink to clean it. I know, I can't have it both ways. I was sort of hoping that the rod in this one would come off but be more secure.
I just keep a glass of water at the ready and do a fast switch. I pulse the mixer in water for a bit and then wipe it down.
To thoroughly clean the rod, you are supposed to put some soapy water in the cup and let it run. I found that you can't do that. The water quickly forms a vortex and the upper part of the rod never gets cleaned. You have to pulse the mixer.
I took away one star because I can't have it both ways.
