2.0 out of 5 stars from experienced ice cream maker
I have used several ice cream makers and by far this is the worst. It is noisy, and takes way to long for the ice cream to churn. Yes, I properly chilled the ice cream mix, yes I properly froze the bowl(second time made sure it was really really frozen. try following the instructions.

If I had written my review based on our first attempt with this ice cream maker, I'd have given it one star. In fact, we were trying to find the receipt when it occurred to me: maybe I should have paid more attention to the instructions.
Sho' 'nuff, it worked.
First attempt, our freezer wasn't cold enough to thoroughly freeze the freezer bowl, and, I didn't thoroughly chill the ice cream mix. Result: milkshakes.
Then, I tried reducing the temperature in the freezer, and chilling the mix properly. Result: very good soft-serve ice cream!
Another tip: while packets of mix that you just add milk to are fine for quick ice cream, invest in a good homemade ice cream recipe book! There is a world of difference between packaged mixes and making your own with real cream and natural flavorings! And, with the latter, you can pack it into a freezer container and save it for later.
The biggest plus for this machine is the freezer bowl eliminates the need for often hard-to-find rock salt and lots of ice!
Just be sure to properly freeze the freezer bowl and chill the ingredients. Unless, of course, you're in the mood for a milkshake.

I have used several ice cream makers and by far this is the worst. It is noisy, and takes way to long for the ice cream to churn. Yes, I properly chilled the ice cream mix, yes I properly froze the bowl(second time made sure it was really really frozen. The bowl just does not stay cold long enough to do what it needs to do, to avoid a soupier mix.. Although that still can be frozen into ice cream in the freeze, it just gets a little icy. Properly chilled and churned ice cream should take no longer than 20 minutes. and this design just doesn't do it.
It might work better if your freezer is large enough to put the ice cream maker in the freezer while its churn it is churning. Don't waist your time...or money.
Buy one that is properly insulated to maintain the cold throughout the churning process. Remember a proper machine should take no more than 20 minutes.
As for this machine, It will work, sort of, it is easy to clean, easy to use.

hope that helps

I tried this machine yesterday for the first time. I was extremely happy with the ice cream maker. It was a little louder than I would have liked, but you get used to it after awhile. The only bad thing is that it took about 60 minutes, instead of the 20 to 40 that they say it should take. I had everything chilled and frozen like they said to do, so I don't know. When I first tasted the ice cream, I couldn't believe it!! It tasted like Breyer's. It was soft, so I put it in the freezer in individual freezer bowls for an hour or two and it was hard like the store bought. I used the basic recipe and it was perfect for my family. My husband it totally into Breyer's ice cream and won't eat anything else, but he liked this ice cream just fine! The clean up was easy. As soon as I had the canister cleaned and dryed, I immediately put it in the freezer. Today I made another batch and had the same perfect result and it was just as jummy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use, delicious results, August 23, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 68320 1-1/2-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, White (Kitchen)
I received this ice cream maker as a gift a week ago. Since then, I've made three batches of ice cream (all from the recipes included with the machine) and I've found that the ice cream maker works very well. The ice cream is quite soft when it comes out of the machine, but if you pack it into a freezer safe container and put it in the freezer for about 3 hours, it firms up nicely. And it is really delicious!

I found the machine quite easy to use. It is a little noisy, but not too bad. The machine itself only runs for 20 to 30 minutes, but the whole process takes a while (chilling the freezer bowl, then making and chilling the ice cream base, then allowing the ice cream to set in the freezer) so you do need to plan ahead. But that isn't a criticism of the machine -- it's just the way the process works.

I would recommend this product.

I made coffee gelato, and it took about 45-50 minutes. The price of the machine is very cheap. The machine gets the job done, even though it can take awhile. If your patient and want to save money, then just go with this machine.

this freezer is wonderful. We don't know how we went so long without it. We've made ice cream in it and it turned out better than great. The service at Amazon was very prompt and it arrived before we expected it.

It is a bit loud, most often takes longer than 20 minutes to make ice cream, and I wish it was a bit larger. That being said, it does what it's supposed to do, eventually. I like freezing the main component rather than using the kind of maker that uses rock salt. I haven't had it that long and I have already used it almost a dozen times. Would buy again if I wanted a model this size, otherwise would buy a model that makes a larger batch. That being said, it is perfect for the size recipes in the Ben and Jerry's recipe book which are YUM!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, July 22, 2010
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 68320 1-1/2-Quart Capacity Ice Cream Maker, White (Kitchen)
I recently purchased the Hamilton Beach Ice Cream maker. I love it!
I used one of the recipes in the enclosed booklet. Basic vanilla and I put some raspberries in too. Just 20 minutes and it was done. Very good and creamy. I can't wait to use it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and better priced than others, May 21, 2010

This is great! We were so excited to use it the first time that we rushed to get the stuff in there after the recommended freezing time for the basin, it was a little thin. The next time it works better and you get a little thicker if you chill the mixture for at least 1/2 the day. I find that it turns out perfect if I mix the cream, sugar and flavoring in the morning and then make it right around dinner time. It's done within 20 minutes and is perfect.
The recipe the book came- it's a joke. Get the Ben and Jerry's book--- SO MUCH BETTER
The price is awesome. it's way cheaper than the Cuisinart and works probably exactly the same.

After trying out many different ice cream makers, with no success, we purchased this one. So far, we love it! The only downfalls are that it is loud, and you need to completely freeze the insert or it won't freeze the ice cream all the way. Also, if you plan on doing more than one flavor right after another, I would suggest getting another insert. But other than that, it is convient, and worth the price. I suggest buying the "Ben and Jerry's recipe" book. The recipes are to die for.
