3.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price
When faced with the option of spending $100 or $30 for a processor of this capacity, I figured I would be crazy not to at least try the $30 (I went to my local Target to avoid the shipping fees). So far, I'm happy, but will likely upgrade in the next year or too. The aesthetic, low profile and weight are all excellent--no complaints.

Kitchen supplies are like an addiction to me. I spare no expense on only the best. Kitchenaid mixers, Le Creuset whatever, All Clad this and that. But one day I was short on cash and decided I needed a food processor. I saw this in a grocery store for, like, $20. I said, "Screw it, this will work until I can afford a $100 Cuisinart." That was a year ago, and I have had no desire the replace this one yet. I grind nuts in it. I've made big batches of pesto in it. Hell, I make pie crust in it on a REGULAR basis (Making pie crust in a food processor, though much easier then using a pastry blender by hand, is absolute HELL on a food processor.) . This little bad boy takes the abuse and asks for more. If it blows up tomorrow, Ill have gotten my moneys worth, and even if I have the money for a better name brand, I would probably just go out and buy another Hamilton Beach. I'm only giving it 5 stars because Amazon wont let me give it 10. Seriously, 'Worth the Money' is an understatement.

I've used the slicing disk to cut a variety of vegetables with no real complaints. It has handled everything with relative ease--some smash up on the sides, but a million times faster and more consistent than by hand.

I haven't used the grating disk, but I'm skeptical of this feature in general.

The motor is powerful and so far my only problem is learning how powerful it is. I positively liquified onions the first time I tried to dice them. The real key is very quick pulses, and very few of them.

My only real problem, and the reason I will probably upgrade, is that the blade sits relatively high, so if you need to puree or even chop something that is less than a cup, it will likely all fall below the blade and you will have to chop it by hand. In slightly larger batches, you might have to do a lot of opening and spatula-ing to make sure the larger chunks are on top so they can be cut finer. So this is not an ideal machine for pesto or nut chopping (the former requires a puree, the latter is heavy and usually done in small batches).

So if you dice/chop/slice a lot of vegetables, this is a great low cost machine, however it likely won't fulfill all of your kitchen's processor needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, November 6, 2007

Stargazer (Kentucky USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
I was looking for a good food processor to make beer cheese for the winter. I use to just use an electric hand mixer before and realised I needed something to give it a much creamier texture.

After checking out a few differant brands and models, which I'm sure are very good too, I decided on this Hamilton Beach 6 cup food processor. Bring it looked well built, blades appeared good and strong, a good name brand and 6 cups being not to small so I can make up a big batch of beer cheese, but not to small so its not a burden to clean.

All I can say is I am extremely impressed with this thing.

Please mind, this is my first food processor, as I have recently been getting into cooking. But this is incrediblly powerful.

I really like the simple features, on and pulse, which pulse instantly turns off when you let go. I found this to be great when I'm adding touch ups to my beer cheese.

This product is very well built too. Its definatly not flimsy and something that can break easily if you so much as look at it wrong, not saying to purposly drop it off a building though. But the bowl and base is very sturdy and strong, which shows a well design and good craftsmanship put into its design and making.

The On/Off/Pulse switch is really nice when your working with a project and need a constant hands on, as its nice and big, quick to use unlike some of the 'button' kinds I have seen. Just rest your hand up on it and have at it.

It is so easy to clean its not funny. Just a soak in hot water with alittle soap. The blades are nice and sharp, not the real thin gauge metal that can bend sideways like paper which I seen on some of the cheaper ones.

A superb saftey feature where you have to lock the top lid over the bowl or it wont turn on. Happened to me and I thought it broke, being my first processor, my mistake on that and feel silly because of it. But the shoot on the lid needs to be on the opposite side of the On/Off/Pulse switch, which is pretty neat, as you add food or ingrediances and if any spill it won't get on the power switch to get messy.

Basically all in all, this is a well built 6 cup, easy to store, easy to use, nice looking inexpensive food processor that is just awsome.

As I said, I originally got this for making beer cheese which whips it up creamy perfectly, but I enjoy this so much I have been making sasa's, other cheese spreads and even use the chopping blade that comes with it to make sliced potatos for home fries.

For the price, it can't be beat. I never thought I would say this about a food processor, but I won't part with my Hamilton Beach 6 cup'er.

Enjoy!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
I bought this after looking at several others in comparison and this got good reviews, to which I add mine. I came into a nice bunch of basil to make pesto with and after trying it in a blender I knew it was time to get a food processor. I have no other experience with them, but this model does all it's supposed to do, is easy to clean and doesn't take up a huge amount of storage or counter space. Amended review........after about 1-1/2 years the switch has gone bad. Still works, but now the off switch is unplug it from the outlet. On second thought, I'd probably spend more to get a more reliable switch, if it's possible. Don't use it that much so it's not a big deal to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+ appliance!, September 21, 2008
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
This food processor (my first ever) has quickly become my favorite kitchen appliance. I never realized that I had so many uses for it and find myself eager (yes eager) to use it daily.

It has an extremely sharp chopping blade (grinds nuts to powder in less than 5 seconds, perfect for making homemade nut butters) and veggies take only a few pulses until they are chopped small. Be careful of the blade when it is sitting in the sink ready to be washed- already cut myself reaching into the sink, proving how sharp it really is. The clean up is a breeze, soak in soapy water for a few minutes. It's lightweight, but very sturdy, making the constant in/out motion to/from the cabinets easy.

There are 2 downsides: (1) The chute is narrow, meaning that things like sweet potatoes must be halved vertically before being sliced, resulting in funny looking scalloped potatoes. (2) The shredder shreds SMALL! I was hoping for longer shreds of things like cabbage/carrots.

Overall, buy it. The size is perfect for a household of 1-4. Price is great for a fabulous appliance!

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do the job at all!, October 22, 2010
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
My old food processor was a Hamilton Beach and I read the reviews on this one and they sounded great. But after I got this home and tried to do my regular chopping and pureeing and shredding, I discovered that this design has major flaws.
The lid has rounded crevice areas that when you are using the shredding disc, the food gets caught up in there and doesn't finish going through the shredding process. You have to take the lid off and dig out the food, especially if you are shredding softer items like cheese. Also the shredder disc when spinning doesn't fit the lid base tightly and there is a gap where chunks of food get through without being pushed down into the shredder and thus continue to spin around in large chunks. Again taking the lid off to dig those out.
The chopper blade also doesn't fit snug against the bottom of the bottom plastic canister so when I am chopping food items like onions, there is a whole layer of onions that lay on the bottom and never meet the blade and because the blade has a gap between the side of the bowl, food sticks on the side and is never processed again. I don't see how this processor could ever puree anything unless you have large amounts that may get into a spin and finally meet the blade. If you are just chopping a small onion, and trying to mix other items, the food gets stuck on the bottom and the sides and the blade never makes contact with them again.
I am going to try to a find another food processor and get rid of this one. It has been a major disappointment. I have had Hamilton Beach processors for years and they have always been good performers. Not this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality for price, October 7, 2008
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
This food processor is good for chopping but the lower blade is positioned too high for pureeing foods. I tried to use it to make nut meal but there were always large chunks left at the bottom. Otherwise, it is powerful and easy to clean.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Kind of Holy Cow, April 8, 2009

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
I got this for five dollars at an overstock sale from Christmastime at Wal-Mart. I would've gladly paid 25, despite being a pincher, and it's worth at least forty as these kinds of appliances go.

It really does appear to be solid and well-built, especially in the most important bits, the cutting blades and slicer/grater disc.

It's very simple to assemble and store it and even wash it, moreso than my manual processor. I don't have to feel like it's a chore, like "Oh I could do that but that'd mean taking out the food processor." I just do, and am satisfied.

As far as the power. This should be much louder. It's basically a lawnmower engine in stealth mode. It doesn't even accelerate. It's 0 and then total annihilation. Anything before 3 seconds still resembles food. Use Pulse and use it wisely. Easily one of the top 20 most entertaining things I've ever seen and the most absurdly powerful appliance or other such device. It's almost comical. In the time it takes for someone to open a door I can turn a head of raw broccoli into broccoli-only salad.

Three cheers. I only need certain things out of it, and I'm getting those things. Our expectations of each other are mutual.

To be fair, I haven't grated yet but I have sliced and that's both fun and without hiccups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than The Higher Priced Ones, December 26, 2008
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 70450 8-Cup Food Processor (Kitchen)
I've owned this food processor for several years, and also own a more expensive one [Kitchen type] and I always reach for the Hamilton Beach. It is lighter in weight [though it has plenty of heft and sits nicely on the counter] Assembly is quick and simple, straightforward, and doesn't take half an hour to set up, and does the job quickly and efficiently. Isn't that really all we want? It has never failed, whether it is chopping fruit or nuts, making pesto, making dough. I use the Pulse feature a lot, as it will grind up cranberries in about 3-4 pulses. And pesto takes no longer. A snap to use! I am looking to get one for my Mom, as she is elderly, and I think this would be perfect for her. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one. The price is awesome considering the way it performs. The plastic bowl is heavy, durable, easy to clean.

This Food Processor is very powerful. The first time I used it I put a bag of pre-sliced cole slaw into the processor (I like it smaller chopped) and pulsed it two times for a few seconds. WOW! It pureed it. Now that I know how powerful it is I only have to pulse it for a second. My old food processor was 15 years old and I didn't realize how much better the new ones are. This is an excellent processor.
