5.0 out of 5 stars No more sharp edges
This can opener is really great. No more sharp edges to cut your fingers. I can open any size can and it goes around it really smooth. I think maybe one time with a square can it did get stuck. But I would give this a big 5 star. Love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Do The Job
The product looks nice, but there are many cans that the can opener simply does not open. Many times you have to run the can opener around the can a second time. I am going to buy another can opener, and this time it will be the regular "sharp edge" type.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safe Enough for the Kids, February 5, 2002

I have had a few electric can openers in the past. I have also purchased several of the smooth edge manual can openers. I've found the electric can openers messy and unsightly on my kitchen counters. The manual openers were always too hard to use. This opener is the best one I've ever owned! I even feel comfortable having my small children use it, because it's simple to operate, and the can edges are smooth enough for them to touch!

4.0 out of 5 stars The added safety is well worth the higher price, December 19, 2000

Having chopped about a million vegetables without a nick, I find it ironic that I'd end up slashing my hand on a can lid. This product is well worth the extra money to avoid those sharp lids. Plus, you don't have to worry about fishing around for the lid, because this opener doesn't drop it into the can. If you have kids who sometimes prepare soup by themselves, or for people who might not see the edge of the lid as well as they used to, I'm sure this product will pay for itself with the money you save on band-aids.

I believe I have figured out the bipolar ratings attached to the Hamilton Beach 76600 can opener. I am convinced that it is a matter of quality control.

About five years ago we purchased a 76600 and, though it took a little practice, we found it to work very well. We really liked the smooth edges on the lid; no more bleeding fingers for me.

Earlier this year it started to give us problems, became unreliable. Without hesitation I ordered a new opener, even though I had read the very negative reviews on this site. I attributed them to perceptual-motor malfunctions.

Well, let me tell you. I cannot get my new opener to work. I even attempted the "plastic-lid cradle" suggested by an earlier reviewer. So far I have been forced to revert to a manual, sharp-edge opener. So, I am led to the belief that very critical tolerances are required for proper operation and that the quality control procedures at Hamilton Beach are inadequate.
The fortunate buyers get ones that function properly; the rest of us get something else. For now I will stick with my old-time manual opener and junk the 76600.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great, if only it would open more than one out of 4 cans!, July 4, 2001

From day one, the cutting blade on this promising can opener would not cut deep enough to open more than one out of four cans, with effort. Maybe one out of 6 cans opens easily, the way it is supposed to. When it opens with more difficulty, I have to brush the metal shavings away from the open can. I threw this appliance out after about a month.<

4.0 out of 5 stars Easier than you think it is, March 30, 2003

I actually shopped around here at amazon for a can opener. I wanted something that wouldn't leave sharp edges and was automatic. I think I chose very well in this product.

It's easier to use than you would think. There's a quick pictorial guide on how to use it, but once you put the can under the wheel and slide the button into on position, you know instantly what happens next. Your can gets opened, it actually cuts under the rim so that the main lip of the rim stays with the top and not on the can. This leaves it very smooth and easy to handle.

I also like that the cord can be stored inside the device. It's not auto retractable, you have to feed it into the base yourself, but it's not a hassle or anything.

This is a good can opener. I guess you could use it with one hand if you were so inclined, but I like to combine actions with both hands. One hand puts the can under the wheel, the other hand slides it to the on position. Then one hand turns it to off position and the other hand pulls the can down.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe all these issues, December 19, 2005

It's a $20 can opener. What do you want for $20? Haven't you ever had to work with items like this? I've had mine for a couple of years. It works great. Sending one to my parents today. Just tilt it forward until your can is level. This will prevent it from spilling. It may take a few times until you figure out the right angle for the can before pushing the control over. You always have to do that with can openers, right? The way the lids detach makes the cans resealable. It's fabulous, and you get this privelige for 20 bucks. Be not afraid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, if you know how to use it, May 29, 2005

A few other reviwers here complain that this can opener doesn't work - either at all or very well. Admittedly, I couldn't work it correctly on the first attempt. You have to read the directions. It doesn't operate the same way as your old 70s model electric can opener.

It doesn't open from the top. It opens from the *side* of the can, at the top.
Gently support the bottom of the can with one hand while resting the can *against* (not on an angle) the machine. Operate the lever with your other hand, and you'll have a nice, clean open can! The cans I've opened so far opened cleanly and without struggle.
Properly used, the opener is very easy to use and gives smooth edges on both can and lid. Perhaps the reviewers who gave it horrible critique should, if they eventually figured out how to correctly operate it, go back to this review forum and update their comments. I like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars No more carpal tunnel pain!, December 26, 2002
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76600 Smooth Edge Can Opener (Kitchen)
I got this can opener just in time to fix my Christmas dinner. What a pain saver. I had purchased a can opener that left a smooth edge but it was manual, not electric and it was killing my wrist to try to use it. This worked just liked the other one without the stress on my wrist. Also- with the edges of the cans being smoothed out, I had no worries about throwing them into the garbage. I would highly recommend this product.
