5.0 out of 5 stars Seems Great. Easier to use than others.
Customer Video Review     Length:: 1:55 Mins
I used to have a green and white Krups Open Master that opened cans in a simailar way. It was thrown out during a kitchen remodel and was later discontinued. I never liked the replacement can openers because the dirty can lid and cutting blade would sink into the food and contaminate it and just make a mess.

Everything written about this can opener on this site is true - except!

I bought the unit after a lot of research and all the positive reviews. And they were all true - excellent unit,....until shortly after the one year warranty expired (isn't that always the way.) Went to open a can - it whirred, spun around, did all the usual stuff - except the can...

I just received the Hamilton Beach can opener a few minutes ago, but this 76606 works as well or better than the old Krups so far.
I'm not sure why this isn't the way all can openers work. I don't see the point of can openers that work the old fashioned way.

The video speaks for itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars UNLIKE MANY CANOPENERS, THE BLADE DOESN'T TOUCH THE FOOD, February 20, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
I loved my Krups Open Master 404 until it stopped working recently. I found that The Krups, which had NO BLADE that touched the food so as to leave food on the blade as with most canopeners, is no longer made or avaialbe except on ebay. So, I started looking to see what is now available. I tried some other brands. These "other brands" had the typical "blade" that cut into the top of the can and the blade TOUCHED the food inside the can. Thus, food was left ON the blade. To me, after using the Krups for 7 years, this was/is VERY unsanitary---having part of the juice or syrup of the food left to dry out and collect germs on the blade. The only way to avoid having food left on the "cutting blade" of most canopeners is to wash the blade EVERY time you open a can. This isn't difficult, but it takes a minute or two which seems like a lot of effort when you're trying to fix a meal for yourself or your family. Enter the Hamilton Beach 76606. THIS ONE DOES NOT GET ANY FOOD ON ANY BLADE. In fact, I didn't SEE any blade on it that touches the food! So, it's as good, or almost as good, as my old Krups. Praise the Lord! :o) boland7214@aol.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hamilton Beach can opener, October 31, 2007

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
This is undoubtably the best electric can opener ever made. It cuts the lid along the side of the can under the beaded lip. It does a perfect job,it is quiet, and does not leave any metal shavings. It will also cut the lids that have pull ring tabs. This saves your fingers. I give this opener a 5 star score.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great....but!, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
Everything written about this can opener on this site is true - except!

I bought the unit after a lot of research and all the positive reviews. And they were all true - excellent unit,....until shortly after the one year warranty expired (isn't that always the way.) Went to open a can - it whirred, spun around, did all the usual stuff - except the can wasn't opened. After a lot of looking and examining, it appeared the piercer/cutter blade was missing - apparently broken off (altho I never found any pieces.)

I called Hamilton Beach - after checking, the lady said there " were no replaceable parts in the unit." So, I've got a paperweight. I asked her what brand she suggested I buy next time around - she said "well, H-B of course." I told her all my previous can openers had lasted 20 years or more and I replaced them just because I got sick of them. I didn't think one year's service with no way to replace the cutter was acceptable, so, despite my admiration of the unit, I'd have to look elsewhere.

Using an estimate of cans opened and the purchase price, I calculate the cost to open each can came out to more than 10 cents/can!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best can opener I ever purchased STRONG CLEAN CUT, November 24, 2007
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
So far I am extremely satisfied with this can opener. It performs extremely well with an effortless clean cut every time. Strong, solid chassie and powerful motor. Appearance is pleasant to the eye. I don't mind leaving this out on the counter for convenience. It cuts on the outside of the can. Lever pulls can into horizontal blade so it can cut both regular and pop top cans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works better than some reviews, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
I haven't had this very long, but so far I really like it. According to some reviews I should have never gotten it. First off I never saw it advertised as being automatic shut-off or one touch operation. It is basically one touch but you have to hold the lever. BIG DEAL!! That doesn't bother me as I stay with the can until it is open anyway, had to with my last can opener or , once the machine shutoff, my can would fall. I like this as I don't get any paper or other debris in with the can contents and it is fairly quick. I like the way it really gets a grip on the can and only lets it go when you release it. The only regret that I have is that it is made in China, which is to be expected of small kitchen appliances. There isn't much choice now. That is the reason for me giving it a 4 star rating.

A neat thing about this can opener is that it leaves one with a little "lid" for things like canned dog food--I put the little lid back on and it seals the food nicely and goes back into the refrigerator.

The only down side I have found to this can opener is that it doesn't work well on cans that have been bent at or near the rim. I tried to force it once to open such a can and wound up with a little metal splinter in my finger--so I now keep my old can opener handy for using on damaged cans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feeding the cats is now fun!, December 21, 2007

I have been leery of these side cutters for years, but when this one said it would remove the top from the "pop-top" cans, I had to take the leap...

It arrived last evening, and I immediately found something to open... And then another... And then took off the bottoms... (Cats were pleased with their evening surprise!)

I am most impressed with this can opener! And that the cat food cans no longer have sharp edges where the pop-top was, means our Great Dane can enjoy cleaning the cans for me...

And it is certainly an attractive machine, for sure... As far as hand's free, that was not a matter of importance to me, it only takes a few seconds to remove even a 3 lb. coffee can lid... Where the Black and Decker run around rechargeable type I have been using, labored big time with those puppies...

The "scissor" holder on the back, however, will only take the skinny bladed ones - something to keep in mind when ordering... My kitchen scissors will not fit - but that's what my knife blocks are for...

;0))

PK

4.0 out of 5 stars One caveat, May 9, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
I favored the results of my research prior to purchase. After receiving it, I was impressed with the size & weight. It's easy on the eyes and I like the way it operates. Since I use a lot less in the way of canned goods than most people I know, I didn't actually try it out for several days. Once I did, my reaction was "wow!". I do believe I have the best can opener *ever*. If this unit holds up well over a protracted period of time, I'll remain a 'happy camper'. Now, for the reason I only gave it 4 stars i/o 5. Upon opening perhaps the 3rd or 4th can, I noticed something *very* disturbing. As I removed the lid, I spotted a very thin strand of metal (about 1-1/4 inches long) jutting out from the top of the can (perpendicular from the body of the can).
Promply removing it, I could only think that had it fallen *into* the contents of the can I might have ingested it! To better illustrate, I *could* have proceeded to empty the contents into a bowl or saucepan and had that metal fall off in the process. Hopefully, this won't happen again....but....anyone buying this can opener *should* be aware of the possibility & be vigilant in it's use. At this time, I really think this *is* the best one on the market and I'm darned glad to have it. Hope this helps anyone considering the purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks great on a countertop., January 14, 2009
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 76606Z Smooth Touch Can Opener, Black and Chrome (Kitchen)
My father has arthritic hands and wanted a can opener. I did the reviews but overlooked one important fact. It has no magnet so the lid does not lift. It cuts just below the rim on the side with a very smooth and clean cut but it is difficult to determine when the can opener has made a full revolution. The top is also very difficult to remove after the cutting has occurred. I do not thik I can return this as it was purchased the beginning of Dec. for a Christmas gift and my father did not save the original packaging. I took it and purchsed him anotehr Hamilton Beach which was cheaper but did have a magnet. I guess it will look good on my countertop now but thought I would at least warn others.
