I loved my Krups Open Master 404 until it stopped working recently. I found that The Krups, which had NO BLADE that touched the food so as to leave food on the blade as with most canopeners, is no longer made or avaialbe except on ebay. So, I started looking to see what is now available. I tried some other brands. These "other brands" had the typical "blade" that cut into the top of the can and the blade TOUCHED the food inside the can. Thus, food was left ON the blade. To me, after using the Krups for 7 years, this was/is VERY unsanitary---having part of the juice or syrup of the food left to dry out and collect germs on the blade. The only way to avoid having food left on the "cutting blade" of most canopeners is to wash the blade EVERY time you open a can. This isn't difficult, but it takes a minute or two which seems like a lot of effort when you're trying to fix a meal for yourself or your family. Enter the Hamilton Beach 76606. THIS ONE DOES NOT GET ANY FOOD ON ANY BLADE. In fact, I didn't SEE any blade on it that touches the food! So, it's as good, or almost as good, as my old Krups. Praise the Lord! :o) boland7214@aol.

Throughout the years it seems as though electric can openers of all sorts, shapes, and sizes have failed me in what they were supposed to do -- open a can. I've seen and used many of them -- from the gimmicky ones that "walk" around the can to the standard sized ones that promise to open your cans with ease. Up till now, I haven't used or seen one that meets up to the job of opening a can efficiently and consistently -- they all seem to break after awhile.

My last "El Cheapo" electric can opener gave up the ghost only after less than a year of service. I saw the Hamilton Beach PoP Top Electric Can Opener here on Amazon and saw the price. It was more than I wanted to pay for an electric can opener, but considering the total cost of all the ones I have purchased before, it was more than the cost of the Hamilton Beach unit.

This can opener works as smooth as silk. You put the can under the holding bar, press the lever, and lo and behold, your can is opened without any sharp edges because it cuts the can from the side and not from the top. No more struggling with those stupid blades found on typical can openers and all the goo that clings to the blade after you open a can.

Since the top of the can you open just lifts right off, this also gives you a nice lid for the remaining contents when you put it in the refrigerator.

There have been some complaints that this model does not automatically turn on and that you, the user, have to depress the handle until the can is opened. I guess people are either lazy or have the attention span of a gnat because the whole operation only takes a few seconds. What else is so important that an individual cannot wait a few seconds to open a can? Another complaint is that the can opener doesn't turn off when the can is completely opened. This is another "non-issue" because the tone of the opener changes as soon as the can is open. It's not rocket science folks.

All in all, this is the best electric can opener that I have used. It is easy to use, reliable, and should last a good long while. The price tag may make you hesitate, but if you've gone through several electric can openers that have failed you, the cost of the Hamilton Beach will pay for itself.

As a side note, teachers will love this can opener because the lids of the opened cans fit right on top of the can (no sharp edges). This makes for some handy containers for pencils, pens, crayons, and other classroom materials.

I used to have a green and white Krups Open Master that opened cans in a simailar way. It was thrown out during a kitchen remodel and was later discontinued. I never liked the replacement can openers because the dirty can lid and cutting blade would sink into the food and contaminate it and just make a mess.

I just received the Hamilton Beach can opener a few minutes ago, but this 76606 works as well or better than the old Krups so far.
I'm not sure why this isn't the way all can openers work. I don't see the point of can openers that work the old fashioned way.

The video speaks for itself.

This is undoubtably the best electric can opener ever made. It cuts the lid along the side of the can under the beaded lip. It does a perfect job,it is quiet, and does not leave any metal shavings. It will also cut the lids that have pull ring tabs. This saves your fingers. I give this opener a 5 star score.

The can opener works well and leaves no sharp edges. It is attractive and easy to use. However, it does not shut off automatically as claimed in Amazon's description. Even the owner's manual says it does not shut off automatically. Had I known this, I would have purchased the 76606 model and saved $10 since I don't need another pair of scissors, the only difference between the two models as far as I can tell.

I favored the results of my research prior to purchase. After receiving it, I was impressed with the size & weight. It's easy on the eyes and I like the way it operates. Since I use a lot less in the way of canned goods than most people I know, I didn't actually try it out for several days. Once I did, my reaction was "wow!". I do believe I have the best can opener *ever*. If this unit holds up well over a protracted period of time, I'll remain a 'happy camper'. Now, for the reason I only gave it 4 stars i/o 5. Upon opening perhaps the 3rd or 4th can, I noticed something *very* disturbing. As I removed the lid, I spotted a very thin strand of metal (about 1-1/4 inches long) jutting out from the top of the can (perpendicular from the body of the can).
Promply removing it, I could only think that had it fallen *into* the contents of the can I might have ingested it! To better illustrate, I *could* have proceeded to empty the contents into a bowl or saucepan and had that metal fall off in the process. Hopefully, this won't happen again....but....anyone buying this can opener *should* be aware of the possibility & be vigilant in it's use. At this time, I really think this *is* the best one on the market and I'm darned glad to have it. Hope this helps anyone considering the purchase.

My father has arthritic hands and wanted a can opener. I did the reviews but overlooked one important fact. It has no magnet so the lid does not lift. It cuts just below the rim on the side with a very smooth and clean cut but it is difficult to determine when the can opener has made a full revolution. The top is also very difficult to remove after the cutting has occurred. I do not thik I can return this as it was purchased the beginning of Dec. for a Christmas gift and my father did not save the original packaging. I took it and purchsed him anotehr Hamilton Beach which was cheaper but did have a magnet. I guess it will look good on my countertop now but thought I would at least warn others.

A neat thing about this can opener is that it leaves one with a little "lid" for things like canned dog food--I put the little lid back on and it seals the food nicely and goes back into the refrigerator.

The only down side I have found to this can opener is that it doesn't work well on cans that have been bent at or near the rim. I tried to force it once to open such a can and wound up with a little metal splinter in my finger--so I now keep my old can opener handy for using on damaged cans.

Everything written about this can opener on this site is true - except!

I bought the unit after a lot of research and all the positive reviews. And they were all true - excellent unit,....until shortly after the one year warranty expired (isn't that always the way.) Went to open a can - it whirred, spun around, did all the usual stuff - except the can wasn't opened. After a lot of looking and examining, it appeared the piercer/cutter blade was missing - apparently broken off (altho I never found any pieces.)

I called Hamilton Beach - after checking, the lady said there " were no replaceable parts in the unit." So, I've got a paperweight. I asked her what brand she suggested I buy next time around - she said "well, H-B of course." I told her all my previous can openers had lasted 20 years or more and I replaced them just because I got sick of them. I didn't think one year's service with no way to replace the cutter was acceptable, so, despite my admiration of the unit, I'd have to look elsewhere.

Using an estimate of cans opened and the purchase price, I calculate the cost to open each can came out to more than 10 cents/can!

We read the reviews and ordered this can opener to replace a standard type opener. Although we like it --- It is important to point out that this unit will not work on some cans. For example, its now near Thanksgiving and this opener won't open standard cans of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce!!! So we had to dig out the old opener and put it back on the counter to handle the cans that this unit can't handle.

Another negative is that with this opener must hold down the mechanism and are never quite sure when the can opener is finished cutting. There is no indication that the process is complete.

So if you decide to buy this unit make sure you keep another standard can opener handy nearby...
