Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Tortilla, chapati, naan, pita, focaccia, roti, lavash, lefse--all these and about a dozen other flatbreads can be baked neatly in this ingenious countertop appliance while their fillings are either cooking or warming in the appliance's skillet. Not only does the 1,440-watt appliance make flatbreads easy to prepare, a detailed, color-photo, 122-page booklet comes along to provide recipes for both breads and fillings, opening an entire ethnic-cooking universe to novice and expert cooks alike. For ultimate ease, frozen doughs (pizza, crescent rolls, biscuits, cornbread, breadsticks, etc.) can also be used.

The appliance works this way: The lower portion is a nonstick bread press. Preheat the press, place a ball of dough on the removable nonstick paddle, and flatten the dough into a 9-inch round by lowering and locking the press handle. The flatbread then cooks and slides easily off the paddle afterward. Atop the appliance is a built-in, 9-inch, nonstick skillet with a glass lid that can be used to further brown cooked flatbreads, to keep them warm, or to cook or warm fillings. The skillet works like any electric skillet and has three temperature settings: warm; medium for baking thick breads like focaccia; and high for sautéing, stir-frying, and pan-frying foods. For storage, the press handle comes out and fits into a rear slot. --Fred Brack

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but poor implementation, October 30, 2002

I enjoy using this to make "tortillas" with the dinner roll dough.

Problems:
1. It is HUGE. Not recommended if you have a small kitchen
2. The cooking pan on top is small and it doesn't come out. It is very difficult to clean after cooking.
3. The tortilla press has to be attended at all times. You have to press it all the time. It makes an annoying noise while pressing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, February 14, 2002
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 80200 Flat Bread MealMaker Bread Press and Skillet (Kitchen)
I'm glad I bought this flatbread maker. My family enjoys the tortillas and other wraps that I make. The flatbreads come out beautifully shaped, and they release easily from the press with a flick of the wrist. The tortillas and the wraps made from refrigerated biscuit dough (the kind that comes in a can) were especially good. I was a little disappointed with the pitas, since they were tough and didn't brown very well on the top griddle. I was happier with the results when I browned the pitas on my stovetop griddle. My guess is that the griddle on the flatbread maker just doesn't get hot enough.

I mostly use this for making flour tortillas as we are a Mexican/American household. I find it very easy to use and my husband loves the fresh tortillas! My Mother-in-law was so impressed with mine that now I have to order her one!!!
