Amazon.com

The brilliantly simple design of the Hamilton Beach commercial manual citrus juicer is as classic-looking as it is effective. Created with rack-and-pinion gearing that allows you to exert up to 2,000 pounds of pressure with very moderate work, the unit extracts maximum amounts of juice from oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes. Pith, pulp, peel, and oil are left behind in the strainer cone, which is removable for easy cleanup. Between juicings, the juicer's handle stays in the "up" position, which makes it easy to quickly add more fruit. A swing-out drip cup at the bottom is adequate for small citrus fruits; it also swivels to the side to make way for glasses up to 5-1/2 inches high and swings back into place to collect drips. Designed for rugged use, the juicer has a heavy-duty metal construction with acid-resistant chrome and enamel finishes. It is suitable to a heavy-duty café kitchen or a high-volume coffee counter, and its Sure Grip non-skid base keeps it still while protecting the countertop. Measuring 7 inches wide by 9 deep, it stands 19-1/2 inches high. Hamilton Beach includes a one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

I bought this juicer after trying an orangex juicer that broke on the 4th orange I put through it. My Hamilton-Beach juicer has lasted through a whole bag now, so here's the scoop:

Good things:

1) Rack & pinion action effectively transfers the applied force to the squeezer. There's no off-axis force so you don't have to worry about the whole darn thing tipping over when you bear down.

2) Gratifyingly simple to disassemble and clean.

3) The metal grate's edges are machined smooth - - no worries about getting cut (one of the problems I had with the orangex product).

4) When you remove your juice glass, a drip cup swings into place to keep residual juice drippings off your countertop. That is a very user-friendly design element.

5) The mechanism does a good job of extracting all of the juice.

6) The resulting juice did not have any hint of strong citrus oil.

Other things:

For a product that bills itself as "professional grade", it seems like it could be easy to overpower & break something if you 'hang on the lever'. I would not be too overzealous about squeezing the last drops if dealing with a grapefruit or a really big orange, for fear of breaking something. But for lemons, limes, and standard size oranges it seems just fine.

While the unit doesn't weigh very much, it's pretty tall -- about 20" in its fully-down, storage position -- so storage may be an issue for some.

Overall:

I'm glad I got this one.

I tried some cheaper pressure juicers like arcosteel and typhoon. Although these two got the idea, they were far away from jucing oranges (they can do lemons and limes OK). Thyphoon got some design issues though. Hamilton Beach is good for small and mid-size oranges (haven't tried large orange or grapefruit yet). It has enough power and capacity to get all the juice out. I can get one glass of juice from two oranges whereas it took three oranges with arcosteel and more with typhoon.

HB has larger and stronger pressure cup that gets the job done. The strainer has little round holes all over the place so juice finds its way down. Others had fewer but larger holes which allowed the white stuff inside the orange get into the juice but also smashed the orange against nonperforated surface. HB's strainer holds the pulp stuck inside wall which can be later scraped and put bak into the juice or discarded. It is not the intention to callect pulp this way probably but I usually scrape it and put it back to the juice for extra fiber.

I also noticed that juice is sweeter because there is lees skin oil. With others, there was more oil and that made the juice taste bitter. I guess it is related with the number of holes being more in HB. Therefore, there is less pressure on the skin.

It is easy to clean. You need to line up the groves and edges to disasemble. Drip collection cup works like charm.

Everytime I squees oranes with HB, it think about what I read once from another review "juice galore". If you tried others, you will like this one. I didn't give 5 stars because it is not perfect (1- squeezing arm stands in lower angle at the time of squeeze, not an efficient angle to use your muscles efficiently if it sit on a normal height countertop, 2- it may not have the same efficiency with larger oranges and grapefruits, and 3- it is kind of expensive but thanks to Amazon.com I got a very good deal). Hope this review helps.

I use this juicer everyday at a very high end restaurant ( I can't mention the name) but I use this squeezing about 100 fruits a day including oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes, a day and it works great I would highly recommend this to anyone, though It does require a bit a pull and strength to squeeze a large fruit, the trick is to bring the fruit to room temp, or even rinse the fruit with warm to hot water before squeezing. This way you will get twice the juice and save money.

The juicer works well and the other reviewers have got it right. I just wanted to add two observations to buyers. First, the juicer is very tall so it doesn't fit underneath you kitchen cabinets. Second, there is a limit to the size of the fruit you can juice. The only oranges I could find at first where large eating oranges and although they could be juiced not all of the orange was juiced. When I started using valencia oranges which are smaller and tangerines it completely juices the fruit.

I've been using these juicers for 3 years behind my high-volume bar. A year of our usage is probably about a lifetime for most people, which is good because thats about as long as they last without needing some work. Yes the construction did change in the last couple years but it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. Surprisingly the problems aren't with the plastic parts or the "cheap" strainer cone. The screws holding in the rubber feet have rusted and fallen off which makes the juicer sit too low to get a pint glass under it. the swing arm for the drip cup rusts which prevent the cup from swinging back underneath when you are done juicing. The screw holding in the handle strips out, making it impossible to keep the handle attached. And the entire assembly comes "loose" after awhile to where the top and bottom halves no longer line up. So, are they invincible? No, but we continue to buy them because they are better than anything else we've tried. It seems unlikely that you will encounter any of these problems in a household setting if you keep it clean and use some TLC (do not put the entire thing in the dishwasher as some of our employees have, it's not made for that) Like most HB products there are replacement parts available but in my experience with this juicer they are the parts that you don't break (the funnel, cone, and cup).

For everyone who complains that they can't get larger oranges or grapefruit in this juicer I have a handy tip...CUT THEM IN HALF. Even large ruby red grapefruit will work fine if you cut them in half.
