Meets all my expectations (so far),
By John S (Texas) - See all my reviews I grew up in Europe and tea is my daily ritual. So I thought this kettle would be big enough for me since I hate to fill up a kettle with water after 1-2 cups. It is particularly convenient when you are having guests. All standart features: automatic shut-off, detachable base. So far it's been doing a great job since I bought it in November.

Great Electric Kettle,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Having drunk a lot of tea in Europe, I decided on getting an electric kettle while here in the U.S. I just received this Proctor Silex 1.7L kettle. I was a little skeptical because it is competing with the likes of Braun and T-Fal. But, I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. It will boil 1.7L of water in about 8 minutes. I thought that was a little long, but I attribute it to the 110 volt system here versus the 220 volt system in Europe. Nevertheless, this kettle works great. The handle is ergonomic, the opening is big enough to clean and or remove the heating element, and it does boil water. I have only had it for a day, so I am not sure about durability. Nevertheless, it's a great electric kettle; a must for any serious tea drinkers!!!

Water tastes and smells of plastic,
Water boiled in this tasted and smelt of plastic. I boiled and rinsed out the kettle numerous times. I brought it back after a week. I couldn't stop thinking about my health and yes I tend to drink a lot of tea, so I do notice it.

Danger: Does Not Always Turn Itself Off,
By
This review is from: Ps Cordless Kettle (Kitchen)
I wanted an electric kettle because sometimes I start the water heating, go to do some work in the home-office and then forget about the water. I ruined a tea-kettle last year doing this and wanted something that would turn-itself off. I've had this kettle (Proctor Silex) for 7 weeks. Twice it's failed to turn itself off. I return and almost all the water is boiled out and it's still going. Fortunately I haven't forgotten it for very long yet - but this is not what I want or need. I won't even use it now unless I'm standing right there.
NOTE: I keep the kettle clean, have not submerged it in water, and the second time I checked to be sure it was firmly on the base (in contact). So this behavior of not turning off is not something I did wrong.

Strong smell and taste of plastic,

I've had this kettle for months and keep hoping that I'll be able to get rid of the plastic flavor in the water it boils, but it's hopeless. It ruins the flavor of tea, but is also probably harming anyone who drinks it.

inexpensive, but poor quality,

After several months of use, there is still a scent of hot plastic from it when used to heat water. I think it leeches into the water too, at least giving it a bit of a plastic odor.
The other problem I have with it is doesn't automatically switch off when you life the kettle from its cradle. This is a problem because if you empty the kettle and put it back on its cradle, you'll have a problem. I would avoid this product. Pay a little more and get a metal one if you can.

I bought my kettle over a year ago and love it. There have been no problems with bad odors or tastes. Currently purchasing a second one to have at work. I use mine at home 1 to 3 times a day. No complaint or regrets.
