I've got 2 dogs (a Collie-Retriever mix and a pedigree Poodle), 3 cats and an Iguana (I got more pets, but they swim...). While I'm very persitent in keeping the house fresh and clean, you simply can't avoid some of the pet smells, which is the reason I bought this product. The product works quite well, very well considering its size and price. However, you shouldn't expect miracles, unless you install one in each outlet of your house. The pet smell (and smoke smell - I smoke too, forgive me for that) is certainly not as noticable as without this product, but is not eliminated 100%. But you do notice it within a few hours (and obviously continuosly after that if you keep it on 24/7). The noise level is considerable - it's not ultra-quiet, but it's not too noisy to distract or be annoyed. The filters are also inexpensive and fairly common in retail stores, perhaps even your local supermarket (as is the case in my area). Given that each filter lasts 120 days under continuous use, or up to 4 months when used "as needed", this is a good thing for those that mind their budgets. For this price and its compact size, the product is well worth it! But if you need every odor removed from your house, consider buying a larger (and more expensive) air purifier.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Oder Eater, October 13, 2002

The Hamilton Beach 04255 TrueAir Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator is a terrific little product that does a great deal of work. Plug it in, turn it on, and in just a few hours you will find that the area around it smells a lot better.

Don't expect a complete odor elimination from this product. For that, you would need to buy a unit that is at least 20 times more expensive than what this one sells for. The instructions clearly state that this Hamilton Beach Odor Eliminator does not eliminate all smells and that it only works on odors that are within a six foot range of the unit. And it does just that.

Let me give you a good example: About once a week I cook bacon for myself for breakfast. Unfortunately, my kitchen ends up smelling like bacon for two to three days after that. When I got my Odor Eliminator, I plugged it into a kitchen outlet and proceeded to cook some bacon. When I came home from work several hours later there was only a faint smell of bacon left in my kitchen, much, much less than what would have been there had I not plugged in the Odor Eliminator.

Though not noise free, the Odor Eliminator is relatively quiet. During the day you will hardly notice it at all, since most any other noise inside or ouside your house will cover it up. At night you will hear it more just because there is less other noise to cover it up. But it has never kept me awake or disturbed me while reading.

This Hamilton Beach Odor Eliminator is a terrific buy, especially since replacement filters are inexpensive and only have to be replaced every 2 to 4 months (depending on amount of use). If you have a big house, you could easily buy two or three of these and spend a lot less keeping your house smelling clean than if you paid hundreds of dollars for one of those bigger units.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great odor eliminator, March 14, 2001

What a neat idea. I put my TrueAir in a room that seems to always have its own unique smells. Within a very short time, the smell was gone. It works so well for the bathroom, I bought one for another room as well. I used to use the sprays, but no more. This item is highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't claim much, but does what it claims, May 24, 2002

This product is not and never claimed to be an air filter. It's not going to cure your asthma or replace your big air purifier. Neither is it going to leave your whole house--or even necessarily your whole room--odor-free. But, if you are concerned about a *single specific* source of odor (such as a litter box or diaper pail) the carbon filter will do a pretty decent job of keeping the odors from spreading when placed *directly* by the source.

The instructions say the unit needs to be placed within six feet of the source of the odor, and they aren't kidding. When I got it home I found my litter box was more like eight feet from an outlet. But, the outlet was about two feet from my chair, and that's the air I'm concerned about, right? No. Even though it's just a tiny sunroom area, that setup had little effect. I had to rearrange things to get the cat box right next to the outlet.

Of course, now the cat box is also two feet from my chair. But it's working out OK with this unit going. I gag on air freshener perfumes more than the odors they're trying to cover up, so this has been my best alternative so far. I do still get a little (odor-free) burn in my eyes from the ammonia--guess it doesn't do much for that--but if I weren't sitting practically on top of the box I don't think it would be an issue.

My model has high ("quick clean"), low, and off settings, so you can turn it on as needed or just leave it constantly running on low. If you choose to leave it on, the noise is fairly low and actually kind of pleasant. It is just the quiet whoosh of air from the small fan. There is no mechanical, humming, buzzing, etc noise other than the air moving. The quick clean setting is good for when the cat and I are both in the room at the same time, but the model offered here does not appear to have this setting.

I... it meets my expectations for effectiveness given the price and given what the manufacturer promised. The downsides would be: extremely limited range of usefulness (measure before you buy); ongoing costs of filters, ... and the difficultly of finding anything but the general purpose filters in stores. If I can find the pet filters, I'm hoping they will be even more effective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fish Smells BE GONE!, August 5, 2001

I am a huge fan of Salmon, Swordfish or Tuna sauteed over very high heat producing a mountain of smoke and an everlasting fish odor that permeates my entire house. That is until I purchased two of the Hamilton Beach Air Cleaner systems. I place one right next to my stove top and the other in an adjacent room and wouldn't you know....it works. The fishy odors are disappated not immediately but within an hour of my having cooked. This is a good thing to point out: make sure you leave your air cleaner(s) on at least an hour after cooking for the full effect. This system also works well with cigar or cigarette smoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Odor Eliminator We Have Found That WORKS GREAT, October 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 04255 TrueAir Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator with Two Bonus Filters (Kitchen)
We give the Hamilton Beach 04255 TrueAir Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator (WITH three replacement filters) a five-star rating and would rate it higher if more than 5-star ratings were available. Here's our reasons why: 1. No fragrance or oil(s) to be dealt with, so no accidents. It's user-friendly! 2. When it is turned on (and the user has the option of having it run continuously or selectively by manually flipping a switch) it provides a soothing white noise 3. This product actually eliminates odors and makes a difference. We experimented by leaving it off for extended periods and then on for extended periods. Seriously, it's the first time we discovered a relatively low-cost, low-maintenance, totally effective Odor Eliminator that delivers on all counts with the bonus of some soothing white noise. The electric bill did not noticeably increase with frequent usage either -- we recommend this product highly. PLUS: ... has it for the lowest price we could find, we did find the unit being sold for ... (at a huge chainstore) but we could not tell from the packaging if it contained a starter filter or not, however; separately there were 3 types of filters to choose from at this particular chain store: general usage, tobacco-odor specific and pet-odor specific BUT individual filters, while available in two more options, were either near to ... each or slightly over -- while at ... the unit is available at a great price AND includes THREE general usage filters. When we compared prices even with shipping and handling ... came out far, far ahead on value. A great product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product given the price, September 8, 2002
This review is from: Hamilton Beach 04255 TrueAir Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator with Two Bonus Filters (Kitchen)
I recently purchased this product at a big chain store. I was lucky to receive two True Air mounts for the price of one. I have two Akitas that are crated in the basement along with a cat litter. Given the small space and lack of ventilation, the pet smell was very noticeable. I was not expecting any miracles when I plugged in the True Air, but after a few hours, I noticed the difference in air quality. It was truly amazing. It did not clean all the pet odor out but I would say it made the basement smell 2/3 better prior to NOT using the filter. As for the noise, it is barely noticeable, my ceiling fan and refrigerator makes more noise than the True Air. When using the True Air mount for pets, I would recommend using the pet filter. I used the so-called multi filter that came with the True Air and it did not work as well for pet odors. All in all, I do recommend the True Air Mount -- shop around and you might be lucky to receive two mounts for the price of one!

I bought this air cleaner today in NYC for considerably more. Needless to say, I was chagrined to see it for so much less here on Amazon.com. However, it's been plugged into an area with pets for 4 hours and the smell is GONE! It's quiet, too. This is a must have.

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 04255 TrueAir Plug-Mount Odor Eliminator with Two Bonus Filters (Kitchen)
I bought one of these for the Kitchen and it worked so well, I bought 3 more for the laundry room, pet room and the basement. I was a little hesitant buying this because it was so small , but it's works great and they have a very funny ad for it too.

Within a few hours of operation, the smell from my 5 hedgehogs, 2 hamsters, and sugar glider were much much MUCH less noticable. The filter has been in for almost 2 months, and it is still working VERY well, and I have yet to turn it off. My friends and company who come over are still surprised to find out that I have this many animals in a small apartment with little odor. Before, I had tried to just mask the odor with carpet vacuum powders and plug in scents which did NOT work. All I can say is I am glad I spent this little bit of money for such a great product. And as for the noise, it is equivalent to the noise a very small fan would make, it's really not noticable to me and is not the kind of noise that would keep someone awake at night (if they are a pretty normal sleeper.)
