3.0 out of 5 stars Average Waffler
This waffle maker is adequate. I like the smaller size for storage and the legs that allow it to stand upright. The waffle stick idea is cute although not the reason I purchased it. It is easier to divide waffles, however. It takes a bit longer to cook than I would like but not so much to discourage a purchase. An overall good buy for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids, July 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
This is ... well spent. I have a very expensive belgian waffle iron, but my kids prefer the store bought frozen "sticks" that they can dip. This solves the problem. It makes wonderfully fluffy waffles that can be broken into sticks for dipping or left whole for traditional eaters. Plus I can make healthier recipes (heaven forbid!) without all the preservatives in the frozen variety.

Perhaps the reviewer who said it took too long to preheat and cook has a defective unit. Mine takes very little time to preheat and the cooking time is just as the instructions state- about 5-6 minutes.

It cleans up easily and store upright so it doesn't take up much cupboard space.

5.0 out of 5 stars First batch was perfect, January 17, 2003

First, I didn't use the recipes in the instruction book. I used pancake and waffle mix in the big bag from one of the warehouses.

This machine can make 1/2 full size waffles or 3/6 waffle sticks.

I made a batch and poured exactly 1/2 cup in each waffle imprint. I didn't use spray. The batter exactly filled up each side, with just a couple of drips. I closed and locked the lid for exactly 7 minutes, and the waffle was crisp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent waffles!, October 20, 2004

This review is from: Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
This waffle maker is a great value for the price. I have made waffles several times and never had a problem with sticking. It is important not to open the waffle maker early to check the doneness of the waffles - that might be why other reviewers had a sticking problem. The recipes I made used only 2 Tbsp oil and there was no sticking. My only complaint is that batter will run out the back if the batter is not evenly spread over the grids or too much is used (I agree to use less than the specified 1/2 c).

I have made recipes both where the eggs are mixed in the batter and those where the whites are whipped separately and then folded in. The latter case resulted in very light waffles - crunchy on the outside and light and tender on the inside. The former case resulted in still excellent tasting waffles with a minimum of work.

I found that a time of 6-7 min worked fine for waffle doneness - leave in longer if you like very crispy waffles. I set my timer for 6 min then let them cook just slightly longer.

I personally like the waffle stix - easy to eat and fun for adults as well as kids! They heat up well in the toaster for waffles anytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kids Will Love It!, January 10, 2003
This review is from: Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
Whenever I make waffles with my traditional iron, it takes forever to make enough to serve a family of 4. So, I decided to look for a second waffle iron. After seeing commercials for frozen waffle sticks, I decided to look for a waffle iron to make these. I have been searching in many stores and on many web sites for the past few months. Finally, I found this item on Target's web site. Of course, I ordered it without hesitation. It arrived yesterday and I made up the first batch this morning. My kids loved them! My daughter who "doesn't like waffles" ate them and enjoyed them. They were really fun, easy and cooked up nicely. Since two waffles (or 6 sticks) cook up on this iron, it is easy for me to feed both of my children quickly. I cooked up the rest of the batter and stuck the "sticks" in the freezer. The kids really liked being able to dip their waffles in syrup. Next time, they would like to try icing as a dip. I think I will throw some cinnamin in that batch. All in all, a very fun but useful gadget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great for us!, November 20, 2004

I almost didn't buy this based on some reviews, but am very glad I tried it anyway.

We have had this for 6 months or better and we use it weekly if not twice a week. I did have some slight sticking just once with one recipe (less fat in recipe). A quick spray from PAM or cooking spray solved that. The waffles turn out perfectly every time. Also, very important to wipe off any residue of spray or batter while still warm so the surface doesn't get sticky or gunky with buildup.

We have found that thicker batter works better than thin. If you are getting uneven cooking, it could be that the batter is too thin and not rising quickly enough to reach the top side surface since this is a thick style not traditional waffle size.

The only drawback I've found is that the clip that holds it together is quite loose so that when standing up in cupboard, could fall ope. We store it where that can't happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little waffle maker - perfect for 2 people!, March 18, 2005
This review is from: Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
We chose this waffle maker because it's a perfect size for 2 adults and we're also watching our weight, so these "stix" are the perfect portion. We found it at our local grocery store, of all places, for the same price as here. It's a nice little appliance to try out. It's really fun too, as well as providing us with quality waffles. I've found a 1/3 of a cup batter per waffle section is plenty. If you overfill it, it will leak out the back of the wafflemaker, but it isn't that bad to clean up.

It cooks perfectly, no need to add cooking spray. Just put a timer on for 6 minutes or so because you don't want to overdo them, they will turn out too hard. Once it starts to steam less and less, or when 6 minutes is up, open the lid and voila, you have waffle stix! It really is quick - 6 minutes until you have wonderful waffles.

My husband's allergic to eggs and I found a great egg-free recipe for waffles and pancakes (Bakin' Without Eggs book by Rosemarie Emro) and it turns out wonderful in this wafflemaker. Even if you're not allergic to eggs, if you're watching your weight or cholesterol, it's a must. For convenience, egg-eaters can use pancake/waffle mix from the box.

So far I am very happy with this wafflemaker, it's a great brand, perfect price, and perfect portion for the 2 of us. And best of all, we're having fun making waffles together! It's a great treat for yourself or gift to a loved one! It's not necessarily a breakfast food, we eat it as an evening snack as well.

Enjoy!!

I bought this even though I already have an electric waffle maker, but I figured the kids would really like the stick form for dunking in syrup - boy, was I right! They love it, it is easy to clean and you can't beat the price.

I thought this waffle iron worked very well. I used a boxed waffle mix and used slightly less than 1/2 cup of batter. We don't like our waffles crispy, so I cooked them about 4-5 minutes and they were perfect. My kids (3 & 5) loved the sticks and loved dunking them into the syrup. The clasp does not fit tight to close the unit, but that's not a big deal. I have a very expensive waffle iron (wedding gift) and I like this one better. For the price, you can't beat it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great waffle maker - kids love it!, July 23, 2004
This review is from: Hamilton Beach Waffle Stix Waffle Maker (Kitchen)
I've used this waffle maker at least 6 times now and they've always turned out great. The recipes in the book are really good. We've done the basic recipe, blueberry, cornmeal, buttermilk, orange, and lemon cake mix. Even though the book suggests using 1/2c. of batter per waffle, I've found that I use slightly less. Nothing I've made has stuck to the maker, not even the cake mix. In all the "from scratch" recipes I substituted Splenda for at least half the sugar. My kids, 4 and 2, love dipping the sticks - especially the lemon cake dipped in a mixture of vanilla frosting, raspberry jam, and a little milk. It was a fun and easy dessert for a picnic. Also, when using cake mix it's a good idea to let it sit a few minutes to thicken before pouring it into the waffle maker. Overall, we love it!
