This automatic Hamilton Jazzmaster is a great watch at an incredible price. While many of the other lower to mid-priced Swiss-made automatics are also great watches, Hamilton Watch Co. (now a member of the Swatch Group) has a rich history. Many of their watches are revered by collectors and hold their value similar to the "elite" and very expensive Swiss brands. Hamilton was founded in 1882 in Lancaster, PA. They produced watches for soldiers in WW1 and WW2, and also developed the first electronic digital watch which they called the Pulsar - now a division of Seiko. The Hamilton Ventura was also worn and made popular by Elvis Presley.

This Jazzmaster is a super great looking watch, with a sapphire crystal, ETA 2824-2 movement, and a large easy-to-read face. While the watch is large, it's relatively light, very comfortable, and can easily fit under a buttoned sleeve (see my photo). I think it makes for a great dress watch with a nice style, without being too flashy or pretentious. It has a genuine leather strap of high quality with an alligator pattern. I wish it came with a genuine alligator strap, but that would have added at least another $100 to the price. Down the road I may upgrade to genuine alligator, but in the meantime, the leather strap it came with looks great and is comfortable.

The ETA 2824-2 movement is ETA's workhorse and used in such watches as Cartier, Oris, TAG-Heuer, and Tissot, to name a few. The day I received my Jazzmaster I synchronized it with the US Naval Observatory Master Clock. To my surprise, after the first week it did not gain or lose even one second! However, it's since settled down, and loses just under 2 seconds per day. Nevertheless, for an auto (at any price) that is incredible, especially considering I did not touch the regulator - that's right out of the box.

I have a few other watches, including some that cost more, but right now the Hamilton Jazzmaster is my favorite watch and I wear it almost every day.

Very nice watch and easy to read at my age. Feels and looks good on the wrist. Well made. I will only purchase self winding watches from now on.
