5.0 out of 5 stars Growing up on Hamilton Place plantation and the changes brought by war, January 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hamilton Place: Some Reflections and Reminiscences (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the reminiscences of George Washington Polk about his boyhood and youth in Maury County, Tennessee. This provides a first-hand account of life for a child on a working plantation in the pre-Civil War South, and some of the many struggles and changes that southern families endured during the war. His extended family had strong religious influences, and the dynamics between whites and blacks in this account are, no doubt, much more positive than were found in other areas of the south.

It would have been good to have an index or table of contents included in the book. A few names were misspelled, but the editor might have transcribed the book exactly as handwritten by Geoge Washington Polk.

Hamilton Place, St. John's Church and many of the people and other places mentioned in the book still stand in Maury County and Nashville, Tennessee today. If pictures of these things had been included in the book it would have been an added plus.
