Book Description

November 1, 2004 Severn House Large Print
Continuing the story of Rose Hamilton and her family first encountered in The Woman from Kerry In the closing years of the 19th century the Hamilton family are enjoying new-found security and modest prosperity as the owners of their own home at Ballydown. John is a respected employee of mill-owner Hugh Sinton, their patron, and Rose's four children are growing into young men and women of whom she can feel justly proud. She has a new, much-valued friend in Elizabeth Sinton, Hugh's sister, and their close bond is a source of comfort and strength to both women. Rose has every reason to be happy with her lot, after the years of hardship and poverty. As she watches James, Sam, Hannah and her last-born, strong-willed Sarah, make their own choices - and mistakes - as they set out in life, she must draw on her inner reserves of courage and steadfastness to face what the future holds.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Rose and John Hamilton have come up in the world. Once very poor, they now are enjoying middle-class life in late-nineteenth-century Ireland after Rose saved the lives of a gentry family, who graciously gave John a job helping run four mills. Their two sons are apprenticed, and their daughters are soon to be out of school. No one knows just how fickle fate can be like the Hamiltons, and Rose is especially grateful for all their good fortune. As in most families, the Hamiltons have a few hardships in store and heartache to bear, including illness and estrangement. What is special about Doughty's novel is how she allows readers to view the world through Rose's eyes. We join Rose as she watches her brood grow and change, always trying to do the right thing. Not only does her love of family come through clearly but through Rose the beauty of the landscape and place in time are also brilliantly evoked. Maria Hatton
