Just one little thing. July 15, 2010

This was honestly a fantastic rendition of Hamlet. I hate most Shakespeare, but Hamlet has always been a work of genius. And it didn't hurt at all to cast David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. Brilliant with brilliant actors, and I am a particularly picky critic of movies, which brings me to my one little point. They shortened the beautiful bit in the middle. 'To be or not to be...' and all that bit. I realize that you have to make cuts here and there for filming, but not that one. And, apart from that it was David Tennant. I was so looking forward to hearing Tennant make that soliloquy. Still, though, not enough to make me take away a star and I'm not regularly inclined to rate so highly. Excellent film and easily the best Hamlet I've seen thus far. Directors, casting directors and screenplay writers should be commended, although, David's and Patrick's presences certainly helped my rating.

Hamlet is iconic Shakespeare.
David Tennant is pure talent.
Hamlet is a play that is meant to be seen and not read. It comes across so much better.
In this production, featuring David Tennant as Hamlet and Patrick Stewart as the ghost and Claudius, the timing is set futuristically. Thus, Hamlet directs his monologues and asides to the security cameras in the throne room. And he sometimes carries around a video camera. Yet, all of the deep meaning comes across strikingly and the production is beautiful.
This is definitely worth all 3 hours and 3 minutes it takes to watch it. It hardly felt like that long at all, such was the flow and the pace of the production.

I can't say what caused me to purchase this without any previews or research. The (at the time of my writing) the five stars of the seven reviews put me in a mood where I figured I would take a chance.

Glad I did and can heavily recommend that you do the same. :-)

The acting is superb. There are a few spots that do feel rough, but it has the kind of energy and intensity that has the ability to transfer a feeling usually only felt in a theater even on a ten inch screen. This has the kind of love that Shakespeare fanatics have; it pours out of the actors directly into the bloodstream (as it were).

The staging had very few missteps for a piece that feels this experimental. Possibly because the acting - the _faces_ - bring you in and exhibit a real connection to who they are during the duration of the movie.

Polonius absolutely superb...
Patrick Stewart underplays some scenes to great and novel effect (a lesson in "stop 'acting' please," just be, and let circumstances speak for themselves). Read more

Incredibly Brilliant
This is by far the best production of Hamlet I have seen. Tennant is a powerful actor. Here he is at once full of wit, driven mad, angry and frightening and yet so vulnerable. Read more

A Hamlet with some spunk
Granted, this version of Hamlet isn't for all. Tenant is a much younger and petulant Hamlet than the noble Olivier or erudite Branagh. Read more

Shakespeare as it should be
This is one of, if not the best adaptations of Hamlet. Modernizing the setting gives us Shakespeare's seminal tragedy as it should be seen, as approachable for everyday man. Read more
