4.0 out of 5 stars Works well, tastes like mud
It's a fuel-drink, so I didn't expect this to taste great. They call it orange-sicle, but it's really, really bland. Not such a big deal to me, because when you need this kind of endurance fuel, you need to have realistic expectations for flavor (my opinion, anyway).

2.0 out of 5 stars Made me nauseous
My first time using it was on a 100km ride. I found that the first bottle was difficult to get down and it was just under two scoops in a 0.7L water bottle. Afterward I felt a little bloated and switched to water for the next bottle. The second - freshly mixed - bottle left me feeling on the edge of vomiting after every sip. I spent the rest of the ride balancing nausea...

I used this for the triple bypass ride this summer (120 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing). It did the job just fine. I needed to supplement electrolytes but I'm a 'white-streak' sweater so I burn through salt like crazy. Still, I needed it to keep me going for about 8 hours and it did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fuel for Long Endurance Events, April 21, 2010

This review is from: Hammer Perpetuem (Misc.)
Perpetuem is a powder you mix with water to make a drink that supplies your needs during long endurance events. It contains complex carbs, healthy fats and a small amount of an easily digestible protein, as well as other ingredients to do things like buffer lactic acid.

If you like to mix it really strong (which is what I do; I carry plain water separately) consider the plain flavor, as the original flavor gets a bit sweeter than I like it when made that way. The latte flavor has gotten great reviews, is supposedly good even when not cold, and has a small amount of caffeine. I have not tried that flavor yet so I can't comment on it.

If you have trouble tolerating Perpetuem when running, consider Hammer's Sustained Energy as an option.

One other thing about Hammer -- the customer support is second to none. Their website is replete with information about sports nutrition and their products, and you can get advice from their well-trained staff. They will be happy to discuss your needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, but NOT in individual packets, April 18, 2010

Mild, enjoyable flavor...similar to melted creamscicle. Using this for half ironman. The product page shows the individual packet for the orange flavor 16 serving size. I received a large canister. I'll just have to transfer it over to snack size zip bags. No biggie--just misleading info page.

4.0 out of 5 stars All around supplement, October 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had heard many positive reviews of this product and explored this and alternative solutions for my endurance training. I love this stuff. I cannot say it does more than gels or bars but it has quite the ingredient list and I love being able to mix my "gel." I am thinking that using this product requires new attention to hydration options because it does provide sodium and other related items. On several runs I became mega-thirsty and I am now thinking I was not so much dehydrated as overdoing it with this product AND a sports drink. I have since halved my sports drink on the long run with success but may reduce it more. One final note. Mix this stuff a a bit thinner than gel consistency as I found it thickened during a long run and I could not squeeze or suck out the last ounces. Now I use a 10 ounce bottle and mix it into a liquid. Problem solved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much easier to get down than the solids., June 5, 2011

I've been using the cafe latte flavor of perpetuem. The taste is much more palatable than the strawberry solids I was using. Additionally, I have a very hard time getting the solid tablets chewed and swallowed while running. This is much easier to mix in a gel flask. In this way I can get the benefits of the nutrient density of perpetuem while using it in a gel like form.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Go-To Supplement for Long Runs, October 1, 2010

I have consumed a lot of supplements over the years, from bodybuilding to endurance sports. With the exception of ON 100% Whey protein, this is me and my wife's favorite supplement.

Tough I'm not immune to the possibility of placebo effect, I've never had any gel, bean, block, or drink that seemed to be as 'magical' as this one. I love that I can mix as needed because I usually can't consume enough water at once for gels. So I make this pretty thick and try to space out my water intake.

I will say that it is hard to mix, but that's really not that big of a deal. We bought a tub of the Orange cream... which is fine. Some days I like the taste, other days I don't. It is certainly tolerable.

Ultimately I'd give it a 4.5/5 and we will be buying again.

I used Pepetuem on a recent Grand Canyon Rim to Rim, for me a 10.5 hour hike. I never tanked out and felt great the next day. I'm planning a Presi Traverse for next month and Prpetuem will be along for the ride.

I use this mix on my 5+ hour mountain bike races. No other product comes close to prevent that 3 hour "bonk" - when you just cant do anything and you don't care... that lack of will that doesn't come from your legs, but your entire system. You can just feel the energy when you use it. (I typically start taking it 1 hour into my races). I highly recommend it.

Side note: do not train with this mix (or use 1/2 concentrations). the high calorie content, which makes it great for race day, might not let you shed the pounds as quickly during the training period if you use it all the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Works Great for Half Marathons and regular workouts, December 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hammer Perpetuem (Misc.)
I've use this item during my Half Marathons and regular workouts like pliometrix and lifting weights. It works all the time! It's great for a pick me up drink before a workout and during your workout. I recommend buying this item. I like the Vanilla or the coffee flavor. Kind of bland for people who likes sweet taste but I don't mind (add sugar as needed).
