I have tried so many different products - from beans, to blocks, to gels and this is the best flavor and consistency that I have found. The texture is more like liquid fudge rather than gooey gel.

No really. If you are a distance athlete, you know what I mean about the almost spiritual aspect of mid-race food when you really need it (credit to The Oatmeal for the unicorn thing).

I struggle, because I hate carrying stuff with me when I run, but almost all the conveniently packaged sport "food" (gels, shot blocks, etc.) make me really sick. "Real" food--like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich--would be ideal, but those tend to make a giant mess when you try to pull them out of your fuel belt and nosh on them at the same time you are weaving and dodging other runners on a hilly course. Most of the time I just suffer, and struggle through the massive wall I hit without food. However, a couple weeks back, I was running a race that I really wanted to hit a PR on, so had to figure out nutrition to prevent the bonk.

This did it. I won't lie and say you should buy 12 to frost your next birthday cake with (no, it's not quite that tasty), but it's pretty yummy when you are 50 minutes into a hard run. It's very easy on the stomach. I drank a small cup of water on the course to wash it down, and didn't have any problems. I had one "dry" (i.e., without any water) on a long run last weekend and still didn't feel like it upset my stomach at all.

If you are experimenting with different gels, give this a shot. I like it better than anything else I've tried, and I've tried A LOT of brands looking for something that didn't make me hurl. This is pretty much the holy grail of sport nutrition as far as I'm concerned.

I tried a few of the gels available: Gu, Power Bar. I did not like any of them as much as the Hammer Gel Chocolate. I do not want caffeine, and it seemed hard to find a chocolate one that did not have caffeine, but Hammer Gel Chocolate does not have any caffeine so this made me happy as well. I read other reviews that mentioned the bottom splitting open, this did happen to me once, but I have just been careful to squeeze from the bottom and have not had a problem since. I am buying my next 12 pack because I ran out - love this stuff.

The hammer gel works REALLY well. I have only tried the chocolate and the raspberry. The chocolate is average in taste and isn't real "refreshing" when its consumed hence the reason for the 4 stars. But of course the performance of the gel is the best I've tried. It gives you a long lasting jolt of energy without a huge drop off. Just like the advertisement says. Try the gel, but the flavor? Maybe you'll like it, but I didn't... and I'm not picky when it comes to the taste of things.

I love the chocolate flavor, but this gel is so thick that it is difficult to get out of the package, and trying to do so just makes a chocolate mess. The problem is that this has the consistency of a thick chocolate fudge instead of a thin chocolate syrup. As a result this is not practical to use during a race or for casual use. But Hammer makes lots of other flavors that work just fine--just not this one.

I'll make this quick. I was on a longer bike ride with my friend (60 miles or so) and I'm way out of shape. So roughly after 30 miles, I my legs started to cramp and I was eating my protein bars but they weren't helping. So luckily my friend gave me these hammer gel packs and I kid you not, within 20 minutes my legs felt so much better and didn't cramp up the rest of the ride. It was like a miracle.

If I'm about to go for a longer ride, I usually take one before my ride and then every 30 or so miles. If it's a shorter like, I usually just take it sometime during the ride before I begin to feel fatigued.

I highly recommend this gel! I've tried chocolate and blueberry and chocolate is my favorite so far.
