5.0 out of 5 stars Great price for a great item!
I hear from other places that an external hard drive should have auto-archive capabilities and other features.

That's not what I wanted. I wanted 1TB of hard drive space to keep uncompressed music, and I wanted to be able to attach that hard drive to any of my three PC's.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke quickly
I purchased this drive as a back up drive for my 2 computers (via Time Machine in OS X). It worked fine for a time, then stopped powering up all together. I had not turned it on for a few months, and during that time the 1 year warranty expired, so I am basically screwed. I emailed the company's customer service and they did not bother to email me back (I was nice in...

I hear from other places that an external hard drive should have auto-archive capabilities and other features.

That's not what I wanted. I wanted 1TB of hard drive space to keep uncompressed music, and I wanted to be able to attach that hard drive to any of my three PC's.

All it does is connect to your computer via USB, and behaves like any other harddrive. It is not especially fast. It does not have a built in theft lock. It holds 1TB of data.

At this price point, that's all it needs to do. I haven't hit any compatibility issues with XP or Vista (one of my PC's is well over 6 years old!), and it can handle data-heavy processing like ripping a CD directly to it (VERY SLOW).

Bottom line: The USB cable is short, but standard. This is exactly what anybody needs for archiving large piles of data!

I had not turned it on for a few months, and during that time the 1 year warranty expired, so I am basically screwed. I emailed the company's customer service and they did not bother to email me back (I was nice in my email, and did not say when I purchased it - at minimum you would expect an ethical company to at least email back with the warranty information). I have read elsewhere that the customer service is poor, you do get what you pay for. If you buy this drive after reading my review, and it breaks (you lose data), you only have yourself to blame... go slap yourself if that happens:) Seriously, don't buy this product or anything from this company. They are crap...

Easy to Install. Fast access speeds. I primarily use the drive to back up my digital pics and MP3's. Very good product for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Used for Dish Network DVR, January 12, 2009

I bought this drive because for 640GB it was a steal. I have the drive connected to the USB 2.0 port on the back of my Dish Network HD receiver - thus I am using it as a DVR drive. It works great for this purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great hard drive, April 28, 2009
This hard drive is very easy to use, it just plugs right into the computer and there is no software necessary. It is a steal for the price. Haven't had any problems like some other reviews have said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product so far., May 12, 2009

This is the second Hammer external drive that I use at work. The first is nearly a year old. Neither has had any problems. They are quiet. There is nothing fancy about them. They are simple and easy to set up and use. The older one is in use as my Time Machine backup drive, so is in use every hour that I am at work. I am currently waiting for a good discount to purchase one for personal use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad Purchase, March 21, 2009
I was weary about buying this product because of the few reviews there were but I have to say it has not been a bad purchase. It took me a while to figure it out but once I did it works like a champ. I like that it has a power switch and I turn it on when I need it. Overall I give it 4 stars because it is my very first purchase on hard drives. Price was 5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars USB interface died shortly after getting the drive., September 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The USB interface died shortly after I purchased the drive. As, the data was more important than the drive, I removed the internal hard drive and transferred it to a different enclosure. Obviously, this voided the warranty. I would not buy this product again.

I've been using this hard drive for about 2 weeks now and I have yet to have a real problem with it. The only thing I can think of that annoyed me is that the drive is formatted as FAT32 and by the time I realized it, half my old hard drive was already transfered over. So aside from having to reformat, I've been quite happy with this hard drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy and convenient, February 16, 2009

I've been using it for about two weeks as a backup device. I made a first backup of 1xx GB , and then a second of almost 300 Gb and it worked fine. After that i've been using YADIS as backup software so it copies all the files that has been modified since the last backup with any problem so far.. i hope it keeps working fine. For the price is a really good disk .. i had other external drives : Western Digital My Book 250GB (This is an excellent device mainly because it automatically switches On/Off along with the computer) and a LACIE 320 GB.. The hammer is better than the Lacie which has a serious heating problem , and as good as the WD so far.. In few words : Highly recommended for the price.
