Book Description

June 7, 2005
On his last day of high school Brett Hartman commits what at first seems like a harmless prank but later turns into the defining moment of his adolescence. Wracked with guilt and pressure from the legal system, his reality unravels into psychosis. Thus begins a twisted maze of forced hospitalizations, instant drugging and violation of patient consent. With unwavering intensity, Hartman chronicles his descent into madness and his struggle to recover while being bombarded by mind-numbing drugs.

Returning to college, he’s compelled to exact a kind of mental revenge by becoming a psychologist. It is during this quest that he learns about the inner workings of psychiatric treatment from the other side and how damaging such treatment can be for patients.

Told with humor and bluntness, the author takes us on a wild romp through psychiatric hell and back, exposing the lunacy along the way and pushing for a more balanced approach to patient care. Hammerhead 84 is both a scorching cultural indictment and an unforgettable triumph of the human soul.

Review

"...a powerful critique of the mental health system..." -- Library Journal

From the Author

The bulk of my memoir takes place in 1984, a year I came to refer to as 'wasted' or 'lost' in relation to the rest of my life. But I don't see it that way anymore. Now I realize how important that awful year was in shaping the person I would become. And yes, I still get angry, and I still laugh about the events of that year.

5.0 out of 5 stars When the destination is the journey, October 19, 2005
This review is from: Hammerhead 84: A Memoir of Persistence (Hardcover)
Brett Hartman takes you on an unforgettable journey where you don't know whether the enemy is himself, the drugs, or the doctor who prescribes them. They all played a role in a real-life passion play and I enjoyed every word. It was written with a wonderfully personal point of view and told with an honesty and memory that was jaw-dropping. Thank you and congratulations for all the people you will touch with this account.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, August 20, 2005
This review is from: Hammerhead 84: A Memoir of Persistence (Hardcover)
It takes a lot of guts to do what Brett Hartman has done, tell the world about a very personal experience that many people would feel shamed by. He has written a book not only about persistence, but how the power of family, friends and inner strength can be used to turn what for most would be a negative experience into a foundation for which he has built his professional career. The book is funny, sad, hopeful and certainly a wake up call for the psychiatric community. It should be a "must-read" for all students entering the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology.
