Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

The Hammond is attractive, interesting, and easy to use. It is mildly disappointing when compared to Oxford's Concise Atlas of the World or Goode's World Atlas. Despite the large index, there are gaps in coverageAfor example, no maps of northern, western or southern Australia. Also, it's often hard to read across the page gutters. Though an excellent atlas for the price, it's not the first choice in this category.

From Booklist

This is another in Hammond's new line of computer-generated atlases, the first and largest of which was published as the Hammond Atlas of the World [RBB Ja 15 93]. The core set of nearly 50 physical-political maps in this new smaller version, the majority double page, is arranged by continent. The set of maps for each continent is preceded by a one-page political map of the continent accompanied on the facing page by four thematic maps (topography, population distribution, land use, and mineral resources). The U.S. and Canada are covered by a double-page map each at 1:14M and by four more detailed double-page maps at 1:7M. World coverage is well balanced, and there is a good level of comparability since a fairly limited number of scales are employed. Elevation is attractively indicated by tints keyed to a color bar in the margin, and selective shading is used to indicate relief. Highways appear in red on larger-scale maps, and railroads, less clearly, in black. Islands and select major cities are covered by inset maps; two pages at the end of the North America section contain maps of six U.S. metropolitan areas. An index of some 45,000 entries is found at the back (compared with the 115,000 index entries in the Hammond Atlas of the World), and the front and back endpapers consist of the same easy-to-use double-page key to the atlas maps.

Additional features include a set of relief maps of the continents (and ocean floors); a country guide with the flag and a few basic data items (newly independent Palau is included); a time-zone map; a couple of pages of data on major world physical features; and a user's guide and a discussion of map projections. A 16-page "Global Relationships" section presents, in well-designed two-page spreads combining text, thematic world maps, and other graphics, an overview of such topics as population, standards of living, and resources.

Although most libraries will prefer the more comprehensive Hammond Atlas of the World, the up-to-date, visually appealing Hammond New Century World Atlas can be recommended for home or school use. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
