"multi-Grammy Winner honors jazz vibraphone legacy",
This review is from: For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal (Audio CD)
This is a real gem featuring multi-Grammy winner Gary Burton - paying tribute to four legendary and influential jazz vibraphonists, he is the master and struts his stuff while performing a varied program that displays not only his knowledge and assimilation of the entire history of the instrument, but also puts his unparalleled virtuosity and creativity on the vibraphone front-and-center.Burton spins a refreshing unique collection of tunes associated with Lionel "Hamp" Hampton and Red Norvo (both pioneers of the instrument in jazz) Milt "Bags" Jackson (who brought a lyrical approach to the vibes), and Cal Tjader (who made the vibraphone an important voice in cool jazz and Latin jazz). Concord has outdone themselves with this one - thanks is in order for one and all who contributed to this outstanding album - John Burk and Glen Barros (executive produers), James Farber (recorded & mixed), Greg Kalbi (mastered)...and of course Gary Burton (also the producer), who honors the jazz vibraphone legacy, while steering it headfirst into creative, new territory...need more of this! Total Time: 61:33 on 12 Tracks...Concord Records CCD-4941-2...(2001)

Burton's new album a tribute to himself, as well,
By Daniel McCarthy (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal (Audio CD)
Gary Burton's new album, a tribute to the four vibraphonists who have had the biggest influence on him, is one of his best works to date. The band members that he assembles on this album are top notch, one must exceptionally note the wonderful playing by lewis Nash on some of the tracks. Bag's Groove is perhaps the best track on the album, with a great unison line played over top of the melody. If you are a jazz fan, or even just a music fan, this album is a must-have. BUY IT NOW!

Stunning,
By Shirley Bell (Antioch, Ca. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal (Audio CD)
We saw Gary Burton live at Yoshi's in Oakland Ca. with the all stars. It's hard to explain the tremedous talent all these musicians displayed at this show. I guess I can only say they just knocked the crowd out. All four guest musicians were nothing less than outstanding and Burton was at the top of his game. Yes the cd rates 5 stars but live is ten. Christian McBride is Ray brown incarnated 35 years ago. The group obviously enjoys playing together as they smiled and laughed through a wonderful set of tunes that left the crowd wanting much more. We felt this group was worth every dollar paid plus some. Yoshi's club has the rare distiction of drawing great talent backed by comfortable suroundings and acoustics. Catch them live if you can.
