4.0 out of 5 stars Ceiling fan remote control with thermostat, June 1, 2010
By
DogNDragon (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hampton Bay Thermostatic Ceiling Fan and Light Remote Control 838-956
We have two of these (Hampton Bay) remote controls. They are connected to Hunter fans and have provided years of problem free service. We are about to buy a third control for a fan in the living room that will finally get a light kit.

On the rarest of occasions, the temperature in the room will be marginally in the "go" zone and nothing happens; that is, the fan should start turning according to the thermostat setting but it doesn't start soon enough to suit the occupant(s). This is easily fixed by grabbing the remote and adjusting the set temperature by a degree. The "being stuck" is a rare occurrence and will fix itself if left alone. For the most part, the fan starts and stops when it should. Sometimes, this happens many times an hour when the temperature in the room is in that marginal zone; we ignore it and let it do whatever it wants and at some point the room either warms or cools so the fan runs faster or turns itself off.

Sometimes the fan runs very S-l-o-w-l-y; this is normal - the fan will run this way if the temperature in the room is at one degree too warm. Running this way has never harmed the fans (our Hunters have been in our house for going on twenty years now). It doesn't seem to hurt the thermostat to have to switch the fan on/off/on/off either.

One of the advantages of using a remote control of this type is that you can avoid the need for the extra wires to control both fan and lights. This is the case for our living room fan; we have only the two wires to the control on the wall. We wish to add a light kit to the fan. No one wants to go into the attic to add two more wires. We will use the remote control to allow us to finally automate the on/off for the fan and to allow us to control the light. The advantage of having the fan turn it self on and off by itself is more obvious when the fan is in the bedroom.

The fan turns itself on when the temperature reaches the set point. The hotter the room, the faster the fan turns. The speed of the fan adjusts by itself. This is particularly nice at night - one can go to sleep with the fan churning away on medium (or high) and sometime during the night it will slow down (assuming the night cools) and by morning it may go off. During the day it comes on whenever it's needed. It goes off by itself. Awesome. The only thing we ever need to do is turn on or off the lights.

One needs only moderate electrical skills to install the device. As I recall, the instructions provided are adequate to the task. A reasonably trained lighting technician at your local lighting store might be able to help give sound advice to help with installation questions. It may be that the instructions from one brand to another are more or less clear. It appears the units are the same across three brands.

Hope this helps!

2.0 out of 5 stars 'Ghosts' in the remote turn lights on and off randomly, May 23, 2011

This review is from: Hampton Bay Thermostatic Ceiling Fan and Light Remote Control 838-956
We built our house back in 2004 and installed the hampton bay thermostatic ceiling fan and light remote control 838-956.
I want to love this and give it five stars but can't. Here's why.
We have two fans with ceiling light kits installed and two of the Hampton Bay 838-956's mounted.
Actually, we have three but the third one doesn't have a light kit.
However, the two that do, about every two minutes, automatically turn on the lights in the ceiling fan light kit for about 20 seconds
and then shut off for roughly the next two minutes.
There is no way to stop this.
I have called Home Depot's 'Hampton Bay' number 877-527-0313. Very helpful but so far, no answer.
I'm going nuts with this.
We have a home theater in our Great Room and, if we turn on the fans while watching a movie on our movie screen, its like 'ghosts' are turning on and off the lights,
every two minutes.
Horrible. Any ideas appreciated on how to fix the problem.
P.S. We love the temperature controlled aspects. Its the 'ghosts' that are the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Remote Ceiling Fan Control!, April 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hampton Bay Thermostatic Ceiling Fan and Light Remote Control 838-956
This complete package of the receiving unit and hand held controller is about as simple as it can be to install. If your fan didn't come with a remote control ... this will fit the bill!

Key features include light and fan speed control. The light control is a sliding scale from 100% down. The fan will give you three speeds besides off. It also has a temperature sensor that allows the fan to automatically adjust the fan speed based upon room temperature ... If the room temp is considerably warmer than you set ... it will switch to high speed. As the room temp lowers ... the fan speed lowers.

I wish I had one of these years ago!
