The most informative & intelligently illustrated source book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hamster (ASPCA Pet Care Guides) (Hardcover)
After my daughter picked out her new pet hamster, I was faced with the task of how to care for it - keeping it happy and healthy. An internet search provided limited results. A trip to the library was far more rewarding. This book was far and away the best of the bunch. The photo and hand drawn illustrations efficiently convey essential information with graphic impact which you easily remember. The section on housing is the most up to date and clearly the best, e.g. illustrating and describing a super enriched ideal habitat, which I could not have previously imagined. Sectons on caring for, behavior, health, feeding and handling of hamsters are also excellent.
IF YOU ONLY HAVE 15 MINUTES TO LEARN ABOUT HAMSTERS - THIS IS THE SOURCE TO SPEND IT WITH.
If you have more time, look here first. The rest are all downhill!

Very good owner's book for children and a good basic book,

Reviews of this book seem to be all over the map. Well, I raised about 20+ hamsters (I lost count) since I was a child and I had a small library of books on them. I suppose I can claim to be experienced and well-read at the very least. Mark Evans's book covers a broad range of owner-breeder topics at a level of reading which is excellent for young pet owners. The book is well-illustrated and reasonably thorough for its targeted audience. It focuses mostly on the care of hamsters than on the breeding of them. It is probably the best hamster book for new and young pet owners and it is endorsed by the ASPCA. If you're getting a hamster as a pet for your child, buy this book for your child; but to round-out your knowledge as a responsible supervising parent, buy yourself a copy of "Hamsters" by Otto Von Frisch (if you're getting a Syrian) or "Dwarf Hamsters" by Sharon Vanderlip (if you're getting a dwarf). Incidentally, I gave the book four stars because its advice sometimes gets too demanding and a reasonable amount of common sense needs to be applied for moderation.

Kids guide,

I already owned a hamster before, but I thought that I should read a little bit about them before I got my next one. I was dissapointed with this book. The pictures are really nice, but I did not learn anything about caring for hamsters. The book would be good if I was a young kid (5 or6), but for anyone who is older, there is not information that is really something that can be used. It talks about things such as weighing your hamster and taking it to the vet, which is something that most hamster owners do not do (don't get me wrong- some do). Also, they really only talked about one type of hamster after a brief, and I mean brief description of a few of the others. So, I would suggest this book if the child is young and is about to get thier first hamster, but not for older kids because they will not learn anything that isn't obvious. Example: (this is a list of things to remember) *Don't kiss your hamster, *Never, ever hit your hamster. On the other hand- the pictures are "live" and very colorful. The words are simple. Also, after all those cute pictures, who could say no to owning a hamster!

We bought this book as a present for our younger cousin since she greatly desired getting a hamster and had borrowed this book from the library many times. She got a hamster for Christmas as well, and with this book she is able to take good care of Freddy.

I hate this book. Sure, the pictures are nice, but most of the info is out dated. Honestly, the first time I read this book I gagged. I am an expert on hamsters, and books like these drive me NUTS. Following thi book could actually kill your hamster.
