This is a really great hamster book, one of the best I've ever read. I've been keeping pet hamsters for over a decade, and I found that all of the information presented in this book was both fascinating and accurate. The author did an excellent job in making this book accessible for all ages. While the target audience of this book is adults, children who are ten and up should have no trouble reading it. The book is uses fun, lighthearted language to communicate the information. It is a very enjoyable read, no matter if you're a beginning hamster owner, or one who has been keeping hamsters for years. No matter what, you'll find lots of facts about the little furry rodents that you didn't know before. I highly recommend this book.

After having a recent problem with a Hamster, I did as much reading as I could to try and solve the problem (biting, anxiety, don't ask...). But as a result, I got the opportunity to read all the top rated books here. If you're trying to decide which one book to buy, I don't think this is the one.

There's a lot of great info here, and I love the way it's written. There's some humor, and really gives you everything you need to know from start to finish. If you're deciding whether to get a hamster, or already have one and want to know more, it's all here.

But.... I had to deduct a star for the fact there is not one single color picture other than the front cover. I just think it's so important with all the breeds and color variations out there, to include at least a few pages to really show people what they look like. It's part of learning about Hamsters.

If you're looking for just one book that has it all, I would recommend the Hamster Guide that's part of the Barron's Series.

Another plus of this book is that an older child as well as an adult would enjoy it. It's written pretty clearly and a nice easy read for anyone.

So, if you don't care about pictures, this is a nice, inexpensive, option. But make sure you know your breeds well before going to the pet store. Most of the employees don't have a clue and all hamsters are not equal when it comes to being good pets for everyone.

We got a hamster and needed a refresher course on how to take the proper care of it. My kids loved looking at the pictures, and I enjoyed the information. Not too technical, easy to understand, and fun to read. I own the cats, and the kittens, books in this series.... all of them are great!

My granddaughter's hamster is living with us; and I knew nothing about hamsters. I refer to the book before feeding it anything new to make sure the new food will be good for it and not harm him. Everything you need to know is in this little book--optimal temperature, how to clean him if necessary, how to recapture him if he gets out of the cage or ball.

It's a necessity for a new hamster "parent".

Hamsters for Dummies is your typical "Dummies" reference book for anyone wanting to become, or already is, a ham ham parent. Sarah Montague guides the reader through all the aspects to hamster ownership, from selecting your pet to how to "read" your hamster's communications. The book is informative, although I was left wanting to know more. I felt like it was rushed, things were just slightly touched on. It was disappointing, because other Dummies books on pet ownership were much more informative.

That being said, it is the best hamster reference book I could find.

I bought this for my 10 year old as she is about to get a hamster. The information was very good and I believe we both have a good sense of how to care for the new arrival. It is a short book, but has been helpful in buying and preparing for the hamster. I am sure there is a lot of information you can get online or in comprehensive books, but this fit the bill to get started.

after reading some reviews and then reading the book for myself, I agree it is shorter than expected. However, the book has good info and covers everything you need to know about hamster care to include how to choose your new hamster. It was a good purchase and I am sure I'll refer back to it from time to time.

Yes, any "Dummies" can keep a hamster!!
Dummies books help with almost any subject matter, so I needed some help with a new hamster and got it. It told me about cages, food and handling the best way, that way I don't get bitten.

Hope this helps with your pocket pet.
