My daughter loves hamsters, so I bought her this for Christmas... then she managed to see the box early and squealed, "Hamster!" How could I deny her? So, fine, she got the darn thing early, and she loved it. It went scuttling around the floor in its ball, then she took it out and it scuttled around some more. BUT... when she held it up to get a good look at it, her hair got stuck in the wheels, and the wheels kept going! Her hair got wrapped around and around the wheel, and it seems there was no automatic shut-off for something like this-- there should definitely be some kind of sensor to automatically shut off this toy if something is stuck in its wheels.

So I had a crying, screaming child while I ran over to shut off the toy and unwind her hair from its wheels. You might chalk this up to a freak accident, but considering we've owned the toy for less than 24 hours, I'm afraid that similar events are on our horizon. I think I may force her to keep it inside the ball.

(Update a week later): Funny thing about this: I knew nothing about Zhu Zhu Pets when I bought this. Only after I saw how much she liked this did I go online looking for other toy hamsters, because when I asked what she wanted for Christmas, she said, "Another hamster." I had no idea about the Zhu Zhu craze! This toy is not a Zhu Zhu (someone asked me that in the comments, so I'll put it out here)-- it doesn't make sounds or change directions or any of the additional things they do. But for what it is, it's cute, and a good price. Using only one battery is a nice benefit, too.

this product is great - its almost like a real hamster - runs in the ball and out of it. it only takes 1 AAA battery - works best on hardwood or tile floors but it will also work on carpet if it's in the ball.

My Great Gran gave my daughter (almost 3) and my niece (4) these hamsters in August 2008. At first, we thought it was a cat toy. She is 91 after all. Turned out to be great fun for my daughter and niece. Felt real and looked real. Quite cuddly for a small robotic. As another reviewer said, it works best outside the ball on a hard surface, but the ball is great on carpet. The girls played with them consistently for over 7 months. My daughter's disappeared, but she still asks about it. It helped spark her curiosity about other animals. She wanted to know all about hamsters. She'd pretend to feed him and even tried putting him on a ribbon leash. Definitely a good buy. Just don't forget to put him away at night. It's so realistic that stepping on him in the middle of the night might scare the pants off you!

First of all, we bought our hamster at The Cracker Barrel [...].(No it wasn't on clearance.) Secondly, we love him! I saw him and thought he looked fun and thought the kids would get a kick out of him. My 3 year old was terrified of him at first but she loves him now and I'm pretty sure she thinks he's real. My son who is 7 has fun with him too! He makes his way around the whole house and it's just like he's our pet hamster minus the mess and smell! Just a warning though, make sure your toddler knows not to put the hamster on their head. haha!!! My daughters hair got wrapped around the wheels and he was stuck on her head. It was hysterical but she lost a chunk of hair... But all is good. It was [...] well spent.

Bought hamsters to use for prizes at our school's carnival and they were an amazing hit! They are adorable and fun and everyone wanted one!

Great Fun! No educational value whatsoever but the cute factor more than makes up for it. Too soon to know how durable it will be -- it cost $11.98 including shipping so it isn't expected to last for years. Kids and kittens of all ages love it. Works best in the ball -- no fibers to get in the wheels, does not run under furniture, and little hands and paws are kept at bay. Self-righting when in the ball, will turn its self off after a while which saves batteries. No cage, no mess, no guilt :) Everyone is very amused by this little toy and I did not get gouged by the Zhu Zhu opportunivors. Win! Win! Win!

Since Zhu Zhu pets are impossible to find at reasonable prices, we tried one of these instead. We were able to take the hamster toy out of its ball, and use it with the zhu zhu accessories. It worked pretty well for the most part. Others have figured this out too, so now they are getting harder to find! Cracker Barrel was sold out!

I bought two of these hamsters-1 for a 5 year old and one for a 7 year old. They were such a hit!!! They played with them constantly. They both took them to school. Just loved loved loved it.

Our school fundraising event had this item as a gift for selling 50 items. My kids are lucky to sell 5. My daughter was devastated as she really wanted this toy. So for Christmas I bought it for her and she loves it! It really is fun running around the house and our dogs sure are entertained by it. It was well worth the $7.95 plus shipping we spent. I have a very happy 8 year old who didn't have to sell $1000 worth of junk to get it! :)

This is the second Hamsuta the Happy Hamster that we purchased. My daughter enjoyed her first so much that when it got malled by our dogs, we decided to purchase another. Hamsuta has been a very entertaining toy for my two-year old daughter and my husband and I as we watch her laugh and giggle with glee. My daughter loves to play with it by herself or with others. Friends have gotten a kick as well. The biggest disappointment is the ball that comes with Hamsuta. It's made of hard plastic and is not very durable. Ours has been dropped one too many times and is now cracked but...we've gotten our money's worth.
