5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and mature performances from a gifted prodigy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty, but too slow
I agree on the Rococo variations being a little too slow (and Fauré too). But the real disaster here is Bruch's Kol Nidrei which is played so foooott-draggiinngg slow that you are getting desperate. Kol Nidrei should not sound like that! Chang takes 12.37 to play this lovely piece, but listen to Andrew Lloyd Webber or - in my opinion the best Kol Nidrei ever -...

This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
The great cellist Rostropovich took a special interest in the exceptionally-gifted young cellist, Han-Na Chang, and conducts the accompaniment on her debut recording. Listening to this incredible young artist one can understand why Rostropovich regarded her as special. Personally, I've never heard a better performance of Tchaikovsky's Roccoco Variations and her performance of the Saint Saens Concerto can stand comparison with that by the incomperable Rostropovich. The performance of Bruch's Kol Nidrei is also quite beautiful. Chang is an exceptionally-gifted young artist whose performances have a maturity which belies her age. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Young talent with mature musicianship, March 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
A young musician is inevitably vulnerable to intense criticism when trying to tackle great masterpieces. Despite the present danger, Chang, on her debut CD, courageously picked to play some of the most beloved works in the cello repertoire. She is competing with Casals' conviction, Du Pre's passion, and Ma's virtuosity and sensitivity. Of course, it'd be obnoxious to place her performance abreast to those of the great masters. However, she clearly makes her own foot prints in performance of these pieces. Her mature musicianship is apparent. She takes incredible risks in playing the Tschaikovsky and the Elegie is nothing short of emotionally uplifting. The CD gives a glimpse of a great cellist that is in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, May 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
This piece is so beautiful, I'm amazed that it has so little recognition. And with a cellist that has an almost inconcievable talent, I hope that it does get heard. The 6th Variation brings me to tears everytime that I hear it. This is one of Tchaikovsky's best pieces, and by far the best performence of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent, August 6, 2001
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
There oughta be a law against anyone this young being this talented. Unlike most wunderkinder, this young lady is more than a technical virtuoso -- much more. The meaning with which she infuses every piece on this CD is truly remarkable. The Faure and Bruch pieces are especially noteworthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful playing, February 7, 2007
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
Han-Na Chang plays all of these pieces so beautifully. Her sound is so lovely it's practically painful. It's wonderfully played, both beautiful and nice sounding all at once. While every piece on this CD is spectacular, Kol Nidrei by Bruch is my favorite, because Chang gets the sound across so beautifully in that piece. Every other song (the concerto, the variations, etc.) is just as amazing, but of them all, Chang's playing of the Bruch is my favorite.

It's a great CD, played by an amazing young artist whose talent cannot be argued with. Chang is an extremely talented cellist, and this CD shows it off with a group of superbly played music. I recommend this whole-heartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, December 22, 2003
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
This is an unbelievable CD. The Faure, Tchaikovsky, and the Bruch are some of the best recordings out there. The Saint-Saens has some really good qualities, but it is not as good as Ma's or Rostroprovich's recordings of the peice. Chang shows great maturity in these recordings. She displays unbelievable technique and musicality. She is to be commended for this great performance. I recommend this performance to everyone. My favorite is the Faure because of the infallible tone that Chang possesess. The Faure is the best recoding that I have ever heard. I have heard the Faure played and played the Faure nemerous amounts of time and I have never heard a performance as goog as this. I am a doublebass player, and I can appreciate the musical difficulty of this piece. This is an Unbelievable CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Han-Na Chang ~ Debut Recording - Tchaikovsky · Saint-Saëns · Fauré · Bruch / LSO · Rostropovich (Audio CD)
I heard Max Bruch on the MPR station and being impressed with the recording, purchased it. I didn't know about Han-Na Chang until the cd arrived and saw the young lady on the cover. This is one of my favorite cd's and still get that awe struck feeling when I listen to it. How is someone so young able to convey such passion let alone play with the technical expertise and conviction she possesses? The selections are superb and Chang's cello playing is otherworldly. There is a bit of literature included with the cd about Chang which is interesting. If you like Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, Faure, Bruch this cd is highly recommended.
