3.0 out of 5 stars Sexual Adventures in the Ancient World
I've read many Black Lace novels. Juliet Hastings is one of their best authors. She often writes historial novels about knights and ladies living in wonderful castles. I prefer those to this one, which is set in an ancient culture which believes in a religion based on sexual rituals. This book had a good storyline. This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
Somewhat atypical of the Black Lace series of books that deal with strong women that live hard, work hard and play hard, the Hands of Amun deal with a strong woman that seems to be taken along a path and adventure that was pre-destined for her in ancient Egypt.

The main character Naunakhte, a beautifull young girl living in a humble village on the Nile with her adoptive parents, hopes that one day she will be able to discover the truth about her real birth parents and origins. The story starts with her quite unexpectedly being summoned to the temple of Amun to be presented to the high priest and pristess and to take her place as one of the servants of the Egytian god Amun.

The temple of Amun is a very powerfull sect and Amun represents the power of the libido and fertility to the people of then Egypt. Naunakhte is thrust into her new life having no experience with the politics of the members of the temple where she discovers she has powerfull friends and enemies from day one. Being of a very sensous nature from birth, Naunakhte has no difficulty fitting into the highly erotic daily life of a loyal follower and she immediately believes that she was predestined to be the favorite of the god Amun.

Don't think that this is a story of a poor little girl that finds out she was born to wealth and brings her parents to live happily ever after since Naunakthe get entagled in the scheming of her enemies and soon finds herself alone again having to use her wits and wiles just to keep alive.

As in any great book of the genre the eroticism is totally a part of the story and integral to the development of the characters, the plot and the scene of ancient Egypt. It is so masterfully written that the reader feels he/she is there in the temple with the followers of Amun and one can practically smell the soft scented oils, balms and perfumes used during their exquisite rituals.

If you can appreciate the mystery of ancient Egypt, the sensuality of the people and the intrigue of a great story then you will certainly devour this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hand of Amun, May 13, 2000

This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best Black Lace books I have read. I rate it right up there with my other favorite, "The Gallery".

It is steamy, but best of all it has a great story too! You don't just get a bunch of jumbled sex scenes with no story (like "Lake of Lost Love"). You get a real story with great sex.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Black Lace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot! HOT! HOT!, April 27, 2000

The inventiveness of a story on an ancient religion based on sex was a stroke of genius. From the initiation of Nuannakte to sex, to the jealousy exhibited by Tiy and the eventual love of Nuannakte by Konsu, all these scenes in the story were just so hot and moving that it kept you reading and then to reading it again. If you like to read about good sex and a good story, this is the one for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the ladies, February 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
Black Lace markets itself for a female audience, but don't let that stop the literate intelligent guys from reading this stuff. Hand of Amun is well written and very spicy. Part of its success is the tight writing. Sex is the premise of the whole thing, so there's no characterization or dialogue irrelevent to our purpose.

Juliet Hastings is actually a very talented writer, and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite For 3 Years, March 30, 2002
This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is by far my favorite Black Lace novel. It has an exotic setting, a decent plot, some superb, sexy scenes and likeable characters. There are encounters from FM to group, some very light bondage and heavy doses of eroticism.

The setting is ancient Egypt where the main character Naunahkte is brought from her village to serve the god Amun in his temple, where the priets and priestesses perform all kinds of erotic rituals. She has enemies, however, and is forced to flee their plotting. Her escape, and her rescue by a mysterious man, lead her down a path of discovery and conflict. Although she loves her protector and the things they do together, she also feels tied to Amun, and the need to return to his temple...

An excellent introduction into the Black Lace genre.

This is not my favorite Black Lace novel, but it was good. If you've ever dreamt about living in ancient Egypt, you'll enjoy letting your mind explore the fantasies in this erotic novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars what kept me going..., February 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
Black Lace books are the only thing that kept me going (and sane) while my husband and I were apart for two years. Plot had little to do with how good a book was, luckily this book does have a plot as well as some hot scenes! Ancient Egypt has never looked so good...The fact that the woman does not always end up with her "true love" makes these a surprising read. The Hand of Amun left me with great dreams of a diffrent life as a servent of Amun in hot Ancient Egypt.

5.0 out of 5 stars For true admirers of erotica...., August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
The storyline captured my attention and piqued my interests, being based upon ancient rituals of lovemaking. Now if only there were more, various ancient rituals included in these stories. I really liked the softly she intertwines Naunakhte's innocence and seduction scenarios, considering that I haven't "blossomed" in the world of sensuality just yet. Ms. Hastings helps ease anxieties, by her depictions in this story, for those of us with "issues". You'll be surprised at how your mind is influenced under the spell of Ms. Hastings! I'm positively one of her newest fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scorchingly Hot, March 8, 2003
This review is from: Hand of Amum (Black Lace) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Black Lace title. And it was an excellent introduction to the series. I was kept awake into the wee hours of the night reading this tale of ancient Egypt. I was shocked at the ending. Having only read romances before this it was a strange felling for the heroin not to end up with the man I was rooting for. I think because of that I came away with a better felling from this book. I deffinetly think it is worth the money as it is relativly difficult to find.
