5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Swindoll!
Swindoll's book on the Book of Nehemiah is a gem that any leader or potential leader would benefit from!

Among the important points Swindoll covers include:

1. God works through ordinary people and can work through unbelievers.
2. God alone has the power to change a person's heart. Do not try to manipulate others - prayer and waiting are essential.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Bible Study
This book was a good look at leadership - more of a bible study. This book looked at the book of Nehemiah, shows some valuable insight and easy to read. It wasn't ground-breaking but does a good job at pointing out some leadership skills in the Bible, specifically Nehemiah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Swindoll!, December 29, 2003
This review is from: Hand Me Another Brick (Paperback)
Swindoll's book on the Book of Nehemiah is a gem that any leader or potential leader would benefit from!

Among the important points Swindoll covers include:

1. God works through ordinary people and can work through unbelievers.
2. God alone has the power to change a person's heart. Do not try to manipulate others - prayer and waiting are essential.
3. Excellent notes on spending time in solitude before taking action - the leader must think things through before rushing in.
4. Leaders need to develop thick skin and carefully evaluate criticism (where it's coming from, the content of the criticism).
5. Nehemiah refused to be intimidated by others and he gives us encouragement to stand firm when needed.
6. A leader has to know when to make a stand and when to compromise - not everything is worth fighting for!
7. Leaders need to be happy people! The world is looking for positive people who are encouragers - people will flock to this kind of person.
8. Effective leaders have good insights and do not have inflated opinions of themselves.

A highly recommended read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Leadership in a nut shell, August 22, 2007

If you think that the book of Nehemiah is just part of Old Testament history, you have missed a lot. Chuck Swindoll's book demonstrates how God can move in the heart of an individual to accomplish His goals. You can also learn a lot about leadership by observing Nehemiah's methods in planning, organizing and motivating a discouraged group of people to accomplish a task. I highly reccomend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be an OVERCOMER, January 3, 1999

This is not only an insight to the book about Nehemiah- it's a testimony of faith. Charles Swindoll shows how we can use Nehamiah's story in our lives today- to overcome obstacles, relate to our superiors, develop self-control, and prepare ourselves to succeed. A wonderful look into ourselves and our relationship with God.

Certainly no theological treatise, Hand Me Another Brick is nevertheless a fine exposition of the book of Nehemiah, and an outstanding application of that book to modern life and leadership. Perhaps Swindoll's best effort, this is certainly one of the best available Christian "leadership" books, and is an extremely entertaining read to boot. Well worth the effort.

I thought this book was exceptional. The comparison between Nehemiah surviving in his world and us surviving in ours is so up=to=date it is scary. Charles Swindoll presents Nehemiah clearly, showing his suffering, his deep devotion to God, and his unrelenting desire to do God's work, no matter what may stand in the way. Read it, give it away; it is a gift from God!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hand Me Another Brick, March 28, 2009
This review is from: Hand Me Another Brick (Paperback)
We used this book as a text book in a course in school so we really studied it in depth and I can not tell you how much we have to learn from Nehemiah! I have been in management and leadership for many years, and I did not realize how many mistakes I have made, and how I have been doing so many things for the wrong reasons. This book gives you an entirely new way of looking at leadership and the book of Nehemiah, it is an easy read, but worth the time to take it slow and use your Bible as you go along. There is a lot of for all of us to learn; I am going to approach things completely differently from here on out!
