Beautiful Book, Classy Projects; Good Gift, May 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: By Hand: 25 Beautiful Objects to Make in the American Folk Art Tradition (Hardcover)
This book is a great coffee-table book and a great craft book. It makes Traditional American Folk Art look classy and fun.
The historical sections which introduce each craft provide just enough information to be interesting but never pedantic. (The author also takes a quote from old books, stories, etc., to introduce each craft -- such as quilting or carving, etc., which gives each section a good context.)
I made two projects from the book (silhouettes -- it takes some practice but is otherwise simple! and a floorcloth) and and had good results, so, the instructions WORK.
I think this could also be a nice mother-in-law or grandmother gift - if you have time to listen to her stories about the old days!
