Book Description

October 1997
Step-by-step sequences show the embroiderer how to create landscapes and gardens using a small number of simple stitches. The book illustrates the author's techniques, and shows how to create a country scene - a simple cornfield with a tree, poppies, grasses and corn heads. It then shows how to stretch and mount the embroidery. There are photographs showing what materials are required and what stitches are used. Readers can learn how to paint the silk fabric background, how to make beautiful fabric flowers and foliage, what is needed to build up texture and perspective and what to do to achieve a three-dimensional effect. A collection of embroideries offers many ideas for more experimental approaches, such as making and incorporating lakes, rivers, rocks, buildings, brickwork, fences and garden tools. Sue Newhouse is the author of "Creative Hand Embroidery".

5.0 out of 5 stars What's new in 1999 from England., June 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hand Embroidered Country Scenes (Paperback)
Probably the most difficult thing about this new method is learning how to translate from the Queen's English to North American English. One of the primary items used in this technique is hessian. Hessian is burlap! English sheeting is bed sheets, the high quality 180 count sort. The technique is applied embroidery. Various parts are made separately and then attached to a painted background. It is akin to stumpwork but with a modern twist. The examples are pleasing and imaginative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Original Embroideries, May 27, 2002
By
This review is from: Hand Embroidered Country Scenes (Paperback)
This, and the other book by Sue Newhouse, are my favorite embroidery books because they really opened my eyes to the possibility of doing original work - and having it be easy! The stitched examples are by Ms. Newhouse's embroidery students - not by the author herself - showing how these techniques really can foster creative expression. One thing I like better about this book is that she provides the sizes of the pieces - it's easier to get a feel for a piece with a sense of scale. The book does provide good instruction on technique but I found the photos of embroideries to be the most important feature. I highly recommend this author's books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!, February 5, 2009
This review is from: Hand Embroidered Country Scenes (Paperback)
I have both of Sue's books and they are both great. There are some beautiful works of other ladies to inspire you and directions from start to finish on doing one of your own. You spend little cost on materials (listed in the book.) I have completed three projects similar to these since Christmas and have more planned.
