Book Description

December 15, 2000
This is a treatment of a triangular love story but with qualities which remove it far from the usual run. Most striking is the figure of Hamel, unorthodox minister of a small French Protestant community. Not only is he sophisticated and highly cultivated but he is also possessed of a powerful sexual magnetism, a quality Amelia Edwards leaves in no doubt. When he falls in love with the young and innocent Marguerite, he is brought into striking contrast with the accepted suitor, Charles, a man of inflexible rectitude but, initially at least, little appeal. The progress of their rivalry for Marguerite's favor draws on the resources, intellectual and emotional of both of them, till it issues in the final dramatic climax. The book is written with humor, passion and acute insight as the story leads into a variety of scenes and moods. Amelia Edwards was a successful Victorian writer of eight novels, short stories and travel books. She is well known today for her classic,

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down, April 16, 2009

This review is from: Hand and Glove (Paperback)
Gartha Wylde's story starts with a predicament quite familiar in Victorian fiction. When her father dies, she discovers herself to be penniless. Off she goes to the wilds of France, to help a young lady improve her English - and from this point on the story takes many an unexpected twist and turn.

Gartha becomes a keen observer of the eccentric but loveable family that employs her, from the curled and perfumed papa to the bear of an uncle. She watches, deeply concerned, as an intellectual cousin and a magnetic preacher vie for the hand of her charge.

If you love extraordinary villains, picturesque settings, unlikely lovers and happy endings, as I do, you will relish this book.

To quote one of the characters, a novel "is not worth reading if you can bear to lay it down at any moment, like a piece of needlework. The author should hold you captive, and the people in the book should become your own familiar friends." Amelia Edwards has certainly fulfilled these conditions with Hand and Glove.
