This review is from: Hand and Head: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Self-Portrait as Soldier (The Discovery Series) (Hardcover)
In this very interesting book on the importance of the hand in art, through the study of one of Kirchner's best-known works, the author not only writes about the historical and psychological context and meaning of the painting, but also traces its roots back to Dürer and Raphael and dwells on the influence of WWI on Kirchner's art and personality. The conclusions he reaches go well beyond the obvious and somewhat misleading judgment that puts Kirchner at the forefront of an anti-war protest. According to him, defining Kirchner as an all-out pacifist is simply missing the point and neglecting the artist's own statements at the beginning of WWI and psychological state after his health was deemed unfit for the military.
