3.0 out of 5 stars I thought the book was mostly boring..., June 17, 2005
This review is from: Hand & Heart of a Soldier (Paperback)
Description from the back of the book:

Emma Davenport hated Yankees, and she considered one particular Union soldier her greatest enemy of all. Years ago, the Richmond belle had promised William Darcy her hand - until the turncoat gave his loyalty to the Northern cause. Then Emma resolved to barricade the handsome devil from her life forever.

Now the Southern beauty had a mission: to smuggle medical supplies for the wounded Confederates. First she had to enter enemy territory - the Darcy residence. She knew her connection to the family supplied the perfect cover, but she didn't count on Will being armed for a war of emotion and a battle of desire. His intoxicating kisses and passionate embrace threatened to break down all of Emma's defenses. And though she was dedicated to her cause, Emma couldn't stop her virile foe from capturing her Rebel heart.

*This book was o.k. but nothing special. I thought the first half of the book was incredibly boring & the only thing that kept me going was the mystery behind it. Other then the 2 flashbacks from years before you don't see any intimacy between Emma & Will until the last 2 pages. The story itself was o.k. but I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't recommend this book. It wasn't much of a romance story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hand and Heart of a Soldier is riveting and mesmerizing!, August 18, 2000
This review is from: Hand & Heart of a Soldier (Paperback)
Elaine Fox won me over with this novel! Emma Davenport is a loyal confederate belle whom decides to assist the Cause in her own way when she is enlisted to participate in espionage; the enemy, the Union family of her former fiance, Captain Will Darcy. Will Darcy, Union special agent knew that Emma Davenport was visiting Washington for more reasons than she confessed to and knew his former fiance was up to something.

But Emma was unaware of the danger she faced, experiencing capture, prison, accusations of exchanging sexual favors for information and murder. She meets and marries her savior, only to discover that her savior is truly the devil in disguise.

Hand and Heart of a Soldier contains all the elements of a 'good mystery', villains, mysterious encounters, double agents, murder and two lovers that keep you wondering, will these two ever find each other.

I truly enjoyed this novel but I must admit I struggled through the first three chapters. After that, happy reading!

My favorite movie of all time has always been Gone With the Wind...this book was so close to real that it astounded me! The characters were wonderful...witty...and the setting of the chaos and atrocities of the Civil War was moving...a touching romantic story! One I would highly recommend!! Elaine Fox is a romantic genius!
