Book Description

Celia’s world begins to crumble when her younger sister, Amber, disappears without a trace. During her quest to find Amber, Celia learns that the eccentric and elusive Edgar Humphries might have had something to do with the abduction. With the police hot on his trail, Edgar desperately conducts his own search to determine if his other personality, a female named Shelly, has kidnapped Amber. That is when Celia decides to follow Edgar around to figure out what his other personality has done. But Celia’s life is further complicated when the mysterious and strikingly handsome Mark Greenbaum, upon whom Celia has a secret crush, appears out of nowhere and offers to help Celia locate her lost sister. Celia eventually comes face to face with the twisted culprit at an isolated location where no one can hear her scream. Embroiled in the battle of her life, Celia’s only hope is that someone will find her and save her before it is too late.

Hand Me Down Evil by Allison James
Judge's Commentary:

"The story starts out interesting and engaging from the beginning. The reader is drop-kicked into Celia's life.  We learn that her mother disappeared a year ago and now her younger sister, Amber, keeps seeing an "imaginary" woman.  The mother's departure has left Celia and her aunt taking care of  Celia's two younger sisters, Amber and Tally.  When Aunt Phyllis and Amber drive to the store before dinner, Tally confesses she also sees the woman that Amber claims to see. Not only that, Tally tells Celia that this mystery woman is now following Amber and Aunt Phyllis. Moments later there's an explosion. Celia runs down the road to the accident to discover Aunt Phyllis, confused and injured in the car, but Amber has disappeared.

The author does a great job engaging the reader from the beginning and creating and building suspense throughout.  She has enough characters that we are never quite sure until the end who the guilty one is.  The author did a remarkable job of wrapping up the major story points so it didn't feel open-ended or unresolved; however, it left plenty of background history and subject matter to use in later books with these main characters. This is an entertaining book and a suspenseful, impressive start to a series. While much of the background information is explained briefly, she provided enough foundation for the next book and added more layers of complexity to her writing.  The writing is clear and age-appropriate, although some readers may struggle with the cross-dressing issue.  Good book, would recommend and look for more from this author."

3.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining novel October 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Hand Me Down Evil, by Allison James, starts off with a bang. The reader is thrown into Celia's life and learns that her mother disappeared a year ago and that her younger sister, Amber, keeps seeing an "imaginary" woman. Celia and her Aunt Phyllis are taking care of Celia's sisters and making ends meet is difficult. Then Phyllis and Amber drive off in their car to run an errand before dinner and Tally, Celia's other sister, confesses she also sees the woman that Amber claims to see. Not only that, Tally tells Celia that this mystery woman is now following Amber and Phyllis. Moments later there's an explosion. Celia rushes to the accident to discover that Amber has disappeared. Celia's experience with the police when her mom vanished wasn't good and she doesn't think they'll do their job this time around either. She, with the help of a classmate, begins her own investigation. What they find is alarming, terrifying, and good fun for the reader.

I could not put the novel down until I read the last page. This is an entertaining novel and a satisfactory start to a series. While much of the background information is explained briefly, James did lay enough foundation for the next book. As stated previously, if a reader can get lost in the story and not question the simplicity of the plot then it will be an enjoyable read. And I would like to see how the author rises to the challenge of furthering the series and adding more layers of complexity to her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was entranced from page one. November 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was entranced from page one... I was so absorbed and lost in the storytelling experience that I didn't do anything else until I finished it a few hours later. Allison is an extremely talented young author on the rise. This thriller is a short book, introducing readers to a new world of science and it's very well written.

When I began to read the book I had no idea if it was a mythical story or a regular novel about a thrilling mystery. This book entertains you and even has you wondering for some time. I cannot wait until the release of the second series of this trilogy next year - truly a must read!

This fast paced mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat. I found myself relating to Ceila and her family living in a small northern Michigan town. I was on the edge of my seat with every page. Absolutely a must read for Adults and Young Adults. I can't wait for the second book to come out! I WILL be reading much more from Allison James! You should too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story and I have found a new favorite author January 20, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic read with lots of truth weaved into a fictional story. Multiple personality is a serious and little understood disorder. Nice to see someone include this disorder in their story. This seems to be a first novel for this lady and I am really impressed by it. Love that it is going to be a series. So have to find out what happens with Mark and Celia.

The story is well written. Smacks with action right from the first page. I started this book late afternoon and finished it ar midnight. Could not go to bed without finishing. It is that good of a mystery/romance/thriller. The characters are well defined and you can understand them right away.

Celia's world goes from tolerable to destruction when her sister Amber becomes missing. Celia soon learns that Edgar Humphries may have had something to do with Amber's disappearance. Knowing the police are on his trail Edgar, who is a multiple personality, tries to figure out if his other personality Sheila kidnapped Amber.

Celia decides to tail Edgar to see if she can find out what Shelly has done? Complications come up when Mark Greenbaum shows up. he is a secret crush of Celia's and a high school classmate. Mark offers to help Celia.
Can Celia find the culprit and her sisters?

This is a book filled with suspence and thrills.
For those who don't want sex scenes, there are none. There are no curse words either.

I recommend this book to age 16 on up. It is a great read and this author is fantastic.

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, non-stop action February 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Enjoyed this book from start to finish and found myself making time beyond the usual just to finish it up. It had some great twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out, it would go a new direction. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Highly recommend this book as a great YA thriller.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too drawn out
The story was too drawn out for the content to the point of belaboring everything. Although the central character was a juvenile, the writing read much too immature.
