'Hand of the Morningstar: 'Advent' and 'Resurrection' are good. Very good in fact....Zondervan hasn't skimped on the details....I was pleasantly taken aback as I read through these 2 volumes, in one sitting no less, at how much took me by genuine surprise. I've been reading superheroes from The Big Two for 15 years and am accustomed to deaths, betrayals, and resurrections on a monthly basis, but [writers] Mike Miller and Brett Burner wisely let the reader in on a few secrets at a time. It is a page turner and it's obvious that this series has a few more aces up its sleeve yet....Miller's black and white art is straight forward, but far from bland. He knows what he's doing....There's plenty of action in the story for him to litter each book with power packed fight scenes and buckets of energetic splash pages. The expressions are spot-on, and sometimes the reactions are downright funny. This helps to compliment the script perfectly....There is a great sequence in which Tempest [one of the main characters] is reading the Bible as the words come alive. Jesus has never looked so heroic! To some, this may come across as not too subtle but it contains the gospel message beautifully and I actually found the choice of verses quite moving. I picked this up at my local Christian bookstore, knowing that it was one of Zondevan's graphic novels. Let me just say that I thought it was simply amazing.

You start out with two dudes talking evilness, and then evil dudes murdering innocent missionaries (not gory, but not for kids under ten) and then... KA-POW, the super heroes show up. I wanted to stand up and cheer--no, really, I nearly did.

As the story progresses, you meet up with another super-powered guy named "the Tempest" and he's hurt (I think he might have been a bad guy). I'm pretty sure the first in the series explains that, but anyway, some other missionaries find him and care for him (apparently he was hurt pretty badly). As time goes on, he falls in love with the missionary's adult daughter, and learns more about Jesus. I'll stop there (for the sake of not spoiling anything), but I was impressed with how the story went.

Meanwhile, the other main superheroes get some medals for saving the one village, and they're all giving credit to this "Morning Star" guy, and all of us Christians know that it's another name for Jesus. It was really cool, because the superheroes call their little group the Hand of the Morning Star (hence the series title), and they talk about waiting for the Morning Star to come--in front of a televised crowd.

There's of course, and the end, and big fat "TO BE CONTINUED" that really makes me want to snarl (I like stories to END, thank you very much) but I didn't feel too horribly unsatisfied, like many other graphic novels leave off, with way too many strings. But this ended pretty cleanly, putting it in my "keepers" section of graphic novels.

I ordered this gift about a week ago. I did standared shipping and had it in a little less than a week. It was speedy processing and shipping. I am still waiting for a DVD I ordered 2 to 3 weeks ago. I was really shocked to git this book so fast.
