Meaningful Lullaby,
By SwamiMami (Davis, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hand in Hand - Songs of Parenthood (Audio CD)
This was a gift to me and actually took a few listens (especially giving attention to the lyrics) before I just fell in love with it. The parenting theme is poignant, with lots of mention of letting go... the saddest part we all dread facing someday. But if you are a folk music lover, it's worth playing at least a few times. Some songs are always better than others, but my sons now request that album for bedtime, and I hear them singing along with the words.

I keep this tape in my car, must have played it 300 times, and "Sunshine" never fails to bring me to tears (I was my Mom's Sunshine). All the songs and all the artists are superb. I am ordering it on CDs for myself and my two children and their children because every parent and child needs this heart music.

Sweet, calming music for parents and children,
By A Customer

I buy this CD for every new parent I know. As a new mother, I found both the familiar songs and the ones new to me to be touching, soothing meditations on the art of loving and caring for children. My son was soothed to sleep by John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" many times, and I was calmed by the words and melodies of Judy Collins, Jackson Browne and others on the CD. This is simply a collection of beautiful, sweet (and a few wonderful quirky silly) songs about and for parents and children. Enjoy!

A good CD but a little dark...,

I like this CD and I will definitely recommend it to others. I only have a few complaints (hence the 4 stars)... Many of the songs on this CD, although beautiful and meaningful, are very dark and somewhat depressing. I was expecting songs something more like Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World". I think if you are in a reflective/somber mood this CD would suit your mood. Rather than feel uplifted some of the songs are a reminder of how old I'm getting and how old my children are getting rather than how much I love and cherish them. Another thing I didn't love about the CD was how it caters a little more toward parents with childeren who are older than mine (4 and 2). I know as my children grow this CD will become more meaningful though. Lastly, there are some really great songs on this CD and some not-so-great songs. So in other words, plan on skipping past a few selections regularly. All the other reviewers gave all 5 stars so I hope this presents a more realistic view of what this CD is about if you are interested in purchasing it.

Fantastic!!,

Bought this because my six-year-old son and I sing Beautiful Boy together, but what a wonderful treasure trove of lovely music!! We listen to this in the car; I listen to it all the time, even without my son. Planning on giving this to all of the new parents I know and to some who are already parents. I find my self smiling and in a good mood when I listen to this. It's beautiful.

One of our favorites,

I am a musician and a music lover, and this is one of my (and my family's!) favorites. I think putting it under children's music is misleading. This is an album for anyone who has children, has been a child, or loves a child. It has songs that make you feel good and songs that make you reflect. It has been on my favorite list for 2 or 3 years now. You won't be disappointed!

Love it!!,

I bought this years ago when my kids were young, but still love it. How wonderful and rare to find a collection of songs about parenthood. You get a sense of connectedness with these great artists as they sing songs of their experiences as parents. John Lennon's love and adoration for his son in Beautiful Boy, Joni Mitchell's bitter-sweet story of children growing up in Circle Game, and my favourite, Marc Cohn's reality check with The Things We've Handed Down. They all really hit home, it's a beautiful CD.

This is one of my VERY favorite albums. I had given it to a family member to borrow, and couldn't wait to get it back, so I had to buy another copy :) The song choices are great and I can't wait to play it for my child when it arrives in November.

Our CD was so worn out, it was skipping!,

We bought this album for my daughter because I was getting tired of singing the full version of "Circle Game" before bed every night. She loves this CD so much that she has listened to it every night and every naptime for almost a year. Last night, our CD started skipping during "Beautiful Boy" and my daughter was very upset, so now I have to buy her a new one. Definitely a good one for anybody's music collection.

This collection of songs is both familiar and new. It puts my children to sleep every night and puts me in a positive emotional state about the parenting experience. It is tender, honest, fresh. A collector item for parents that children will love!
