Book Description

"Continued brilliance. The characters will make you laugh and cry and fume while you're reading." Colin Quinn

With a family like this, who wouldn't need absinthe?

Fionnuala Flood, mother of seven unruly thugs, takes stock of her life on her 45th birthday, and it couldn't be more of a misery. She's been fired from the corner shop for stealing, her two oldest sons are in prison, her husband's hands are fondling more than frozen fish at the packing plant, and her lesbian daughter has just published a book exposing the family's attempts to get their claws into Auntie Ursula Barnett's lottery winnings the year before. Daughter Dymphna, unwed mother, has just been kicked out of her boyfriend's house, adding two more mouths to feed.

Desperate to raise money to travel to Malta for the launch party and wreak havoc, Fionnuala puts into motion a get-rich-quick scheme that preys on the weaknesses of others and will hopefully add a bit of luxury to her empty coal bin of a life. The scam, however, unleashes dark secrets that bring Ursula back to town for a final showdown.

Hand In The Till is a darkly comic look at revenge, retribution and, perhaps, reconciliation. With a shot of absinthe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Quirky Read November 7, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just went back and reread both of Gerald's books (An Embarrassment of Riches & Hand in the Till) as the weather had me indoors for a bit. Enjoyed them just as much the second time around. I highly recommend you carry a copy in the car to make passing the time while waiting for school pickups. Just be ready to laugh. It will provide you with a great perspective for "dysfunctional" just in time for family bonding during the holidays. An Embarrassment of RichesHand In The Till

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining all the way March 14, 2011
By Kiki
Format:Paperback
'Hand in the Till' is an excellent follow-up to 'Embarrassment to Riches' where Gerald Hansen brings us further into the lives of the Flood family. The shenanigans of Hansen's characters keep you wanting more. This book is witty, comical, and entertaining all the way. Like most of the readers, I'm looking forward to the follow-up and hoping that Fionnuala may finally perform a good deed.

i agree with the other reviews. this book is hilarious...Fionnuala at her wickedest, i kept waiting for her to do something nice, but it never seemed to happen...and Dymphna, just as slutty as ever..paddy finally getting some (or trying to)lol...Ursula trying to be nice to them again, but happily she saw the mess they made of things and turned around and came back to the states.. cant wait for the next book

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this story August 7, 2014
By kat-art

Loved this story.....hilarious but an eye opener....some truly ghastly characters. ..but considering their background and history I guess its not entirely unexpected. ... i live in Australia but was born in Ireland and found the mix of Irish slang and turns of phrase ....and american grammar a bit odd....

This is entertaining reading for home, subway or beach! Hand in the Till is funny and fun to read, and Hansen is a master of witty, tongue-in-cheek prose. A must read for anyone looking for something lighthearted and inspiring!

Darker than I anticipated. I was looking for comedy, but this was really a bleak story. It may have been an accurate portrayal, but I was left feeling depressed.,

A worthy sequel to the Embarrassment of Riches saga. The Floods are a luckless lot but it's our fortune to read of their escapades. Terrific dialogue and story. Read more
