Book Description

September 28, 2006
In a response to the sleek forms and perfect angles of most late twentieth century design objects, many of today's artists and designers are returning to handmade work such as hand lettering, hand drawing, and hand sewing. By Hand features an international collection of the most noteworthy artists and shows their work in detailed photography and insightful texts.

From books to pillows to T-shirts to toys, the pieces in this volume define an alternative view of contemporary design. Personal craft is emphasized over perfection and the personality of the artist is put forth as a key element of the finished product. From Kiki Smith's lovingly etched birds to Barb Hunt's knitted land mines to dynamo-ville's one-of-a-kind puppets to Evil Twin's hand-stitched publications, today's art revels in the care and consideration of craft.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content, but poor quality images, December 11, 2009
This review is from: By Hand: The Use of Craft in Contemporary Art (Hardcover)
I was intrigued by this book the instant i saw the title. I make pots and I am always on the hunt for books that survey craft artists. I like the content and the artists that are shown in this book, but some of the quality of images is downright appalling. It makes me feel like no one was checking up on this and they hired some 12 year old with a disposable camera to take images for some of the artists. I am glad to get the names of some of the artists, but i really feel its a shame for all parties to not aspire to a higher quality of representation of the work shown here. Definitely not a best foot forward, especially considering this is a book about craft/craftsmanship.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simply gorgeous book, July 4, 2007

This review is from: By Hand: The Use of Craft in Contemporary Art (Hardcover)
I've been eyeballing this book for quite some time and finally added to my collection.

I have a BFA in Crafts and am always on the lookout for books which address craft as a fine art form versus craft as a DIY/hobby. By Hand definitely covers it.
