4.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper at coldsteel.com, September 22, 2007
I can't believe there's a list price of $655 for this sword when Coldsteel.com lists the price at $399.99.

I've had my Cold Steel hand and a half sword for a while, and I like it. Today however mine snapped after accidently hitting a tree branch on the ground while clearing out some weeds and getting some sword practice in. I believe this is an isolated case however with the tempering, as watching the Cold Steel Sword Proof DVD, it would have been clear that if it was the same problem for all the hand and a half, that the blade would have snapped in their 90° bend test with a vise.

I only hope that their customer support will be as good as their swords are, and will post a review about Cold Steel's customer support if Amazon.com will allow me to post it on here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cold Steel Hand and a Half Sword, June 11, 2010

This review is from: Hand and 1/2 Sword (Misc.)
I'm an SCA fighter and medieval arms enthusiast and have been collecting, practicing with and taking care of battle ready swords for about 30 years now. The latest addition to my collection is the Cold Steel Hand and a Half Sword. I received it yesterday. The balance is really good due to a more functional rather than ornamental pommel. The blade is light and fast and the grips seem more suited for smallish hands (which I have). Very quick, very light and very sharp are the descriptions that come immediately to mind.

There is no false edge for a blocking line off the back of the blade or close to quillions for a ricasso. The length of the blade is factory sharp, point-to-quilion, double-edged. It's good the balance is great because you will not be able to grab the blade in front of quillions or engage in any number of "after Marozzo" two handed sword tricks. I strongly encourage you not to try as you'll likely just cut the heck out of yourself.

The fittings are plain yet elegant. The pommel appears to be peened to the tang, the hilts are secure and solid. I don't forsee the quillions developing a "rattle" even with a lot of use. Quillions are smooth and unadorned and look like they would put a pretty nasty hole through an opponents forehead at close quarters.

The scabbard is wood covered in leather with metal at the tip and throat. A nice little embellishment is laser cut into the tip cap.

If you're a really large person with big hands the sword may be too light and hilts too small therefore uncomfortable.

For utility, I might use the sword to hack into a carcass or clear some light brush. I would not use it to chop wood or for re-enactor live steel practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Sword, March 12, 2010
This review is from: Hand and 1/2 Sword (Misc.)
My husband gave me this sword for Christmas in 2008 and it's a great sword. It is very sharp and well balanced and worth the price. It's scary sharp, to put it mildly and both of us have cut ourselves handling it, so be aware it's the real deal and not a toy. I practice with wasters that cold steel sells. They make an excellent product.
