Biography

“…a guitarist with impeccable technique.” – The New York Times
“Klugh is a master of nylon acoustic guitar and fingerstyle technique.” - DownBeat

The highest praise Duke Ellington would offer people he admired was to say that their music was “beyond category” – and, in many ways, that phrase exactly captures the spirit of ... Read more in Amazon's Earl Klugh Store

In a recording career of over three decades, master guitarist Earl Klugh has been lauded as a prodigy and a groundbreaker of contemporary jazz. Klugh's highly-anticipated Concord debut, HandPicked, is a self-produced solo album with guest guitarists Bill Frisell, Vince Gill, Jake Shimabukuro and others.

Earl Klugh who's celebrating his 60th birthday has released what he calls his most personal and profound record yet titled 'HandPicked' (16 tracks). It's self produced and his first release with Concord Music Group. 'HandPicked' has three brand new Earl Klugh songs in the classical coloured "Where The Wind Takes Me", the syncopated "In Six" and the beautiful folkish "Morning Rain"; two previously recorded songs in Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" which he recorded in the 1978 CD 'Magic In Your Eyes' and the closing "This Time", a 1980 vocal track sung by Al Jarreau and eleven covers/renditions handpicked favourites of his (some of them from artists who influenced his music and hence quite personal songs) including Everly Brothers' "All I Have To Do Is To Dream" which features Vince Gill, the interesting Eagles' "Hotel California" featuring Jake Shimabukuro on ukelele, "Lullaby Of Birdland" a George Shearing classic, Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight", the opening Burt Bacharach/Hal David hit "Alfie", Beatles' "If I Fell", Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass "More And More Amor", Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster's "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" and the soul hit "Going Out Of My Head".

Stand-outs/gems/my favourites are "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" (wonderful melody and great guitar finger pickups as one would expert from the nylon string acoustic guitar maestro), countryish penned "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (featuring country legend singer-songwriter and guitarist Vince Gill), "Morning Rain" (great melody) & "This Time (solo)".

On overall, Earl Klugh still has got it in this new CD release 'HandPicked' which he self produced. He handpicked some of his all time favourites including artists who influenced his music). A recommended CD listening.

What is there not to love about this? A master musician pulls up a chair and starts playing his guitar for you (joined by Bill Frisell, Jake Shimabukuro, and Vince Gill on each of three tracks). This is one for a rainy afternoon, the end of the day when you just need to repair, or late at night when everything is quiet and you finally have a chance to relax. Absolutely love it.

Earl Klugh doesn't play guitar...he deconstructs guitar. I've been listening to Earl Klugh for almost 20 years and I still can't figure out how he makes the incredible sounds come out of that instrument. There is something almost supernatural about it, especially because the music doesn't seem overly complex on the surface. If you try to mimic his guitar skills, you won't come close to the same sound. It's well known that many guitarists can make the same riff sound different - and Earl Klugh is obviously no exception - but when it's nearly impossible to figure out what a guitarist's fingers are actually doing, that's special talent. If you're into acoustic guitar, check out this album for an incredible sonic experience, but don't try to play along with Earl, or you'll just befuddle yourself into madness.

The 1980's was loaded with classic Earl Klugh albums such as the likes of Wishful Thinking, Soda Fountain Shuffle and Life Stories. Klugh continued into the 90's recording memorable material but since entering the new millennium his recording profile has somewhat diminished but certainly the quality of the recordings showed no parallel. Throughout his career Klugh's original recordings have peacefully co-existed with his other projects of cover albums focusing on the work of other artists. HandPicked is one of those projects and while the results of been mixed in the past there is no doubting that Klugh's unique twists here have resulted in HandPicked feeling somewhat handmade.

So what made this album any different to Klugh's other cover albums? First, the album features duets with three other artists. First there is the delectable "Blue Moon" that features Bill Frisell as well as the ultra smooth vocals and guitar work of Vince Gill on "All I Have To Do Is Dream". But clearly the best of the three duets can be found on the more progressive "Hotel California" where Klugh's understated but precise guitar work is in complete unison and tandem with Jake Shimabukuro's ukulele. Despite clocking in at over eight minutes the song still leaves you wanting more.

Between the above duets include some of Klugh's interpretations on well celebrated songs such as "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Alfie" and "If I Fell" to name a few. Klugh even includes two of his own compositions which are "Where The Wind Takes Me" closing out of with "This Time". For those of you not familiar with the latter this was co-composed with vocalist Al Jarreau back in the eighties and was a huge hit for Jarreau.

...without the music of Earl Klugh? A great song selection included here, and collaborations with Jake Shimabukuro and Vince Gill. This CD was worth the wait, from a true artist. Thank you Earl Klugh for 30+ years of inspiration.

Klugh returns to the pure and simple values of his playing that he had in his first albums in the 1970's - fantastic, sensitive, uplifting acoustic guitar, without any over-producing or unnecessary layers of sound.
