Although most mental health and behavioral health professionals have encountered adoption triad members-birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted persons-in their clinical practice, the vast majority have had no formal or informal training on adoption issues. The Handbook of Adoption is the first text designed for mental health practitioners to specifically address the many dimensions of adoption-related issues which can and do affect adoption triad members, specifically in the United States.

Editorial Reviews

"Unique and refreshing in its total inclusion of the entire adoption triad experience, the book strongly supports more fully incorporating the needs of this special population in psychotherapy and social work degree programs." -P.M. Salela, University of Illinois, Springfield (P.M. Salela CHOICE )

This book disappointed me. The authors did not make enough reference to recent scientific literature. To complete with the recent meta-analytic reviews like:

van Ijzendoorn, M. H., & Juffer, F. (2006). The Emanuel Miller Memorial Lecture 2006: Adoption as intervention. Meta-analytic evidence for massive catch-up and plasticity in physical, socio-emotional, and cognitive development. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 47(12), 1228-1245.

An integration of psychoanalytic and empirical data would have been great.

-A Psychology Psy.D.-Ph.D. student.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource on Adoption Issues, November 12, 2007

This review is from: Handbook of Adoption: Implications for Researchers, Practitioners, and Families (Hardcover)
This is a great resource on adoption issues, which is why I included it in my Listmania collection of books on the topic. As a child psychologist who works primarily with foster and adopted children and their families, I found this book very educational. Some of the content can be a bit clinical, and so parents might find themselves overwhelmed with the content. But practitioners working in this field must have a copy. I like how the authors address cutting-edge issues in adoption, addressing the complexity of children, families, and the child welfare system.

Christopher J. Alexander, Ph.D. (Author, 'Diagnosis, Assessment, and Treatment of Foster and Adopted Children; A Guide for Parents and Practitioners,' 2009).
