Unreliable,
By Flying High (Everett, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (Paperback)
Be careful "which" FAA handbook you buy. This one is reprinted by Skyhorse Publishing, who in the past has changed contents, titles, artwork, effective and release dates as they were originally published by the FAA. For example, this book is listed as new for November 2009. This book was originally released by the FAA in 2008 -- the November 2009 date reflects when this company started reprinting it and does not reflect any new or changed information from the original book the FAA Wrote. I rely on ASA for all FAA handbooks to ensure I've got the "real deal."

Must Have for Pilot or Pilot-to-Be,

This review is from: Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge: FAA-H-8083-25, December 2003 (FAA Handbooks) (Paperback)
This is a reference that every pilot, CFI or pilot wannabe should have. It covers the basics of flight in simple to understand language. Keep a copy on your book shelf to loan out to anyone who is interested in learning to fly.

A great digest of aviation basics,

This book is definitely the best introductory book to the main aviation concepts I ever read. Each issue - from flight static and dynamics to FCS, propulsion, avionics and navigation, weather theory and influence, flight and ground operations - is considered in this book with a technical, but easily understandable, approach. The book is, as a matter of fact, an introduction and, therefore, is not suggested to experienced readers. It's, in any case, a five-star introduction.

A great way of gaining and reviewing aviation knowledge. Up-to-date and easy to follow. Packed with pertinant information with little or no dead wood. Usable for student pilots through ATP's. A very cost effective book.

Standard GA training book,

This book has good illustrations of basic aeronautical concepts. Many companies make big bucks making new versions of this. This book is government issue, so the information is public domain. IE, printing costs are less due to no licensing fees.I would say that, compared to the Jeppesen Guided Discovery book, or many of the other similar ones, this book is probably about 85% of ease of absorption, but about 15% of the price. This book can be downloaded from the FAA in PDF. I highly recommend both the PDF and the print copies, but the PDF edition is free.

I have no previous aviation experience other than my father was a navigator. I needed a resource to prep for the ASTB and most military test prep books were junk when it came to the ASTB. This book really helped prepare me and I think it will continue to be a resource to me while in flight school.

This is the "official" FAA text on the subject. However, it took some determination to get all the way through. I much preferred Rod Machado's book. His humor can be a bit corny but you'll get through the book and understand the material much better. Rod Machado's Private Pilot Handbook: The Ultimate Private Pilot Book

There is a new version of this book available. I thought Amazon would have sent me the latest version. I was wrong.

The book would be GOOD if it wasn't because it has way too many errors, some "figures" are completely useless, and unless you go to their website and download the PDF (free) version with the ERRATA SHEET you would never know it... They could have done a review before printing it
