Before I purchased this book, I owned the first edition and this book for several years. This second edition improved upon the first with pictures of slightly better quality and some new or remade graphical plots. The paperback cover isn't as tough as the first edition however, so if you are planning on using this book in the field, you will want to get yourself a waterproof jacket for it.

Beyond these somewhat physical differences, the text remains basically the same. That is: it is easy to read, provides good background info (including the older references) and is easily understood by science professionals and laymen alike. It is not, however, an exhaustive list of methods. There are some key methods missing, such as protocols for determining bethic microalgal biomass by collecting, sectioning and extracting Chlorophyll a from sediment cores.

Being more than 20 years old, the methods detailed in the book are obviously not the cutting edge that you find in limnological/oceanographic laboratories today but they are generally very reliable (and inexpensive!). Being a PhD candidate, I appreciate the economy of the analyses detailed in this book.

This is a good book reference book to own. I've recommended it to several colleagues and several friends who are involved in the aquarium hobby.
