filled with mistakes, poorly edited,
By kelly londry "computational dynamics & virtua... (Ann Arbor, Michigan) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Handbook of Small Electric Motors (Hardcover)
This book has some good points. Most notably, it contains a lot of detailed data and information related to the design and mass production of motors. The problem is knowing which information to trust. As a case in point, I counted 28 formula errors within the first chapter alone. In my view, errors of this type and number are unacceptable -- they undermine whatever value the book might otherwise have. Regrettably, other serious flaws exist. For example, the editors chose (incredibly) to repeat entire sections of the book: literally word-for-word. Apparently, they were either asleep, or else they thought a bigger handbook would sell better. The truly sad thing is that the book does have potential, and it is evident that a lot of work must have gone into it on the part of its many participants. Perhaps with some capable and conscientious editing work, a second edition will be more worthwhile. In the mean time, there are other resources that are much more deserving of one's valuable time and money.

Excellent Resource for the Motor Designer,
This review is from: Handbook of Small Electric Motors (Hardcover)
This book offers an excellent treatment of all the issues involved in the design and the manufacture of small electric motors; generally, the concepts apply to all machines, small or large, as well. One thing to remember is that this is from the "Handbook" series, meant to be a desktop or bench reference; information is placed where it is needed, and is sometimes placed in more than one section when that makes sense. My particular interest is in materials and this books offers a superb discussion of materials in the context of contemporary electric motor design and manufacture; one has to return to Allegheny Ludlum from 1961, now thoroughly out-of-date, for anything of comparable depth. One can say that a particular concept or method should have been updated since this was published (let's hope, rather, that things do continue to advance), but I know of no other resource in this field that provides such a full breadth of detailed information. I've seen dog-eared copies on the desks of too many first-rate designers to give it anything but the highest recommendation.

terrible and faulty theory, good on the practical side,
By laszlo gabor (austin, tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Small Electric Motors (Hardcover)
The theory of how electric motors work is antiquated, badly explained and full of mistakes. You can't trust the formulas.Such a peaty, the theory is the easy one to do right, it has been the same for hundred years, get it from a good textbook. Lots of useful informations on the practical side. Very poor editing.
