Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Handbook should prove invaluable for those who seek to pursue the research that will carry this field to its next level of depth and clarity. Those who want to pursue such research have a solid sourcebook, one that offers access to the leading thought and tools in the field." (from the foreword by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence)

"The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence will fast become a must-read for scholars and practitioners alike. The range of coverage from theory to assessment to intervention brings the reader quickly up to speed with the latest developments in understanding how social, emotional, and practical intelligence help us all navigate our social worlds." (Nancy Cantor, professor of psychology, University of Michigan, and coauthor of Personality and Social Intelligence)

"The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence is a landmark contribution not only from a theoretical/empirical point of view, but for its practical implications. Emotional Intelligence is the centerpiece of leadership and organizational success, and this collection of exceptional articles is an enormously useful guide that both illuminates and advances our thinking on this topic." (Warren Bennis, distinguished professor of business administration, University of Southern California, and author of On Becoming a Leader)

From the Inside Flap

When Daniel Goleman's bestselling book Emotional Intelligence was first published in 1995, most readers were not aware that the area of emotional and social competence has been the subject of scientific study and empirical research for many years. To accurately perceive, understand, and express our feelings, to control our emotions so they work for us and not against us, has long been known to be essential for, effective communication, social adeptness, adaptability, self-actualization, and personal happiness.Until the publication of The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence, there has been no definitive or comprehensive text on the subject of emotional intelligence. Reuven Bar-On, the person who coined the term "EQ" and developed the first test of emotional intelligence (the EQ-I), assembled with James D.A. Parker a brilliant group of researchers, academics, and practitioners for this basic and eminently useful publication. Interdisciplinary and multimethod in nature, this handbook for professionals, businesspeople, educators, clinicians, and students brings together various schools of thought and ways of approaching such different aspects of the wider area of emotional intelligence as alexithymia, personal intelligence, practical intelligence, and closely related disciplines. It emphasizes the importance of empirical methodology, developmental studies, behavioral observations, and psychometrics in order to describe and conceptualize this construct and the key components that can increase human effectiveness and wellness. In addition to the theoretical material, this handbook provides practical applications, specifically in the field of education (for designing programs to educate children to be more emotionally and socially intelligent and to reduce negative behavior) and in the workplace (for applying this approach in recruiting, hiring, training, and promoting employees and managers to improve organizational effectiveness).Reuven Bar-On, an Amer

4.0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about learning the background to E.I., June 14, 2001

This review is from: The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence : Theory, Development, Assessment, and Application at Home, School and in the Workplace (Hardcover)
The Handbook of Emotional Intelligence is a must read for anyone who is serious about emotional intelligence. Through this book, Bar-On and Parker have brought together a world-class collection of academics, psychologists and researchers. Before the Handbook was written, researchers and practitioners who wanted to get to the bottom of emotional intelligence needed to look up thousands of sources to even start their research. Bar-On and Parker have completed a sterling effort - the chapters include hundreds of research studies and the links are made between many different strands of research on intelligence and emotion and they are brought together in a 'tome' of useful information. This book is not a light piece of bedtime reading. It is a text book which should be on the shelf of anyone who wants to hear direct from the key researchers who have helped to create the field of Emotional Intelligence, so well popularised by Daniel Goleman in his book 'Emotional Intelligence'.
