5.0 out of 5 stars Much needed outline of important information, October 22, 2006
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
Eric Hansen and UCSF have done a great service to residents in radiation oncology with this book. Each chapter has what they call "pearls" (need-to-know general information) followed by work up, staging and then the studies section. The studies cover the important trials for each disease site with what ends up being perhaps too little editorializing. There are treatment "guidelines" listed by stage. At the end of the book, there is an appendix filled with helpful medications and abbreviations. It's up to date and fits well in the coat pocket. It is most useful if you have a baseline knowledge of the data but even on its own, it's very helpful. Given the lack of similar available books, this is a well done much needed addition.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Buy, November 28, 2006
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
A Niiice!! There is at last a good "starter" book for students and residents (and even outside specialties) interested in radiation oncology. Other fields have had similar introductory/review books for years, but this has always been lacking in rad onc. As a first-year radiation oncology resident, this book has been invaluable, being extremely "high-yield," yet a quick read for any given topic (much more so than the baby-Perez, and certainly more up to date). Its the first thing I read for a new disease site, before a coming pimp session, or patient presentation. The key papers summarized for each topic are a great place to start when looking for more in-depth reading. The various appendixes, which cover commonly prescribed drugs to tumor markers, are also essential to have for easy access while in clinic. A "must have," certainly before investing time and cash in a major text.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!, January 22, 2007

Most of us as residents always had difficulty gleaning the truly important bits of information and clinical trials from the standard rad-onc textbooks. This is the handbook we've all been waiting for, and this is the book that several generations of residents have talked about writing--but it's finally here. The chapters are well organized and includes the latest AJCC staging. I especially like the treatment recommendations by stage, as well as having ACTUAL pictures of the treatment fields. I only wish I had this book as a first year resident.

Definitely recommend. Our residency program created a similar series of notes for each disease site, but having this all fit in your pocket alone is worth the cost, carrying scraps of paper is a pain. Secondly, they have updated trials and added new stuff which really is needed every year or so. Lastly, the practical tips for simulation have been useful for me out in community practice. Thank you for putting this together. DL

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a succint resource for residents and students!, December 7, 2006
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
This is the book that we have all been waiting for. Dr. Roach and Dr. Hansen have created the ideal resource for residents and medical students. Each chapter has "pearls" of epidemiology, anatomy, pathology, and clinical presentation. The work-up is then outlined as well as staging guidelines. Finally, treatment guidelines(with relevant references from the literature!)along with treatment complications and follow-up. This book is perfect for 4th year rotations and is very compact (small enough to easily fit in a white coat pocket). An outstanding resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Radiation Oncology Handbook, October 16, 2006
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
An extremely comprehensive handbook for radiation oncology providing an excellent overview of the individual cancer specific sites as well as references and summaries of appropriate, important and key articles. Dr. Roach and Dr. Hansen in addition to all of the contributing physicians have done an outstanding job providing a thorough yet readable handbook for radiation oncologists.

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful, September 28, 2010

very useful. even better than the first edition. every radiation oncology resident should have one because it is a very good summary of every cancer by site (i'm not a resident and i use it nearly every day). it's small than other textbooks and easier to understand in the daily routine.

This is a great book to have as a quick reference for major studies, staging, appropriate treatments. It was a very helpful review for the re-certification exam in radiation oncology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook that you can squeeze into your white-coat, September 4, 2008
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
It's concise and has some solid pearls as intro to each section, lists most of the studies/trials that affect management, includes basic workup, staging tables and management algorithms/tables.
It's also useful for really basic simulation/planning pearls along with some dose constraints.
Great for morning conference prep - at the very minimum, read the relevant chapter out of hansen. The high-yield nature of the information will serve you well.

Some chapters are more high-yield than others (each chapter is by a different set of authors), as is true of any book.

You can also use it to orient yourself on the issues concerning a certain site, before you choose to memorize every word in perez, leibel & gunderson ;)
You can *squeeze* it into your white-coat.
In short, for a new resident, it's indispensable.

Haven't had a chance to check out the new book by Dr. Hafty (I just ordered my copy) in detail - but at first glance that book seems a little more verbose and thicker (will not fit in white-coat) - whereas most of the info in Hansen is in outline format.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 99% fat-free guide to radiation oncology, May 29, 2007
By
Andrew Potter (Adelaide, South Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology (Paperback)
The Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology is a must-have for residents and trainees in radiation oncology. Written almost entirely in note form, the authors present the absolute essentials for patient management - from initial history and examination through to follow-up.
Brief refreshers of anatomy and pathology are intelligently included where relevant. Stage-by-stage treatment recommendations are clearly drawn from concise summaries of relevant landmark publications. Practical hints for treatment planning are included along with handy guides to dose constraints and potential toxicities.
The Handbok does not replace the more detailed commentary of a full Radiation Oncology text, but is an invaluable summary of key points.
Highly recommended.
