For Ortho only,
By MRD "EM resident" (Midwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Fractures (Paperback)
I'm an Emergency Medicine resident, I felt that the vast majority of information in the book did not apply to EM residents. Too much info regarding grading of fractures and operative technique. Grazes over the topics needed for family medicine, urgeny care, emergency care (what needs admission, what needs emergency consultation, etc). Recommend this book for orthopedics, but not Emergency Medicine.

The Book to Own,

This review is from: Handbook Of Fractures (Paperback)
This is a must book for anyone wanting to do orthopaedics or as an orthopaedic resident. Also available in a PDA form which is very handy for covering the ER.

Must-Have for the Ortho Resident,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Handbook of Fractures 4e (Kindle Edition)
"Handbood of Fractures" is THE "go-to" guide for any first-year ortho resident. At first, I was put off by its small dimensions (the majority of our ortho texts are the size of smart cars), but bought it on the recommendation of an older (and wiser) resident friend. As a PGY-1, it is an indispensible starting point. True, it isn't the end-all, but any book that contained all there is to reference re: all ortho issues would have to be moved into place by a small crane.
If I were to describe the book in a phrase, it would be as an ideal "launching pad." Any more detailed study can be readily ferreted out, but in the trenches, "Handbook of Fractures" is near indispensible as an instant reference for everything from casting to trauma call. Additionally, it is the best beginner's manual I have ever seen (and I have read a LOT) for establishing at least a foothold in the many different directions that ortho can take you. If ortho is your future (or present), get "Handbook of Fractures." I only wish I had discovered it as a medical student!

Best Concise Book for the Orthopaedists back pocket,

After wearing out my third edition, I decided to get the fourth. It is slightly wider, which makes it less easy to fit in the back pocket of scrubs, but it has more information on treatment modalities. I would recommend this for any resident.

I have found this book to be surprisingly thorough for a "handbook." It is easy to glean information from, which is a must for me in my busy practice as a PA.

For the begginer...but also the senior will enjoy it.,
By Rogelio (David Chiriqui) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook Of Fractures (Paperback)
A very well done fractures and dislocations manual that will help in all most any moment...and during the resting time will be enjoyable for senior orthopaedist. Enjoy it and will improve your knowledge...or perhaps send you to Rockwood...the classical treatise of fractues. Any way I really enjoy this manual...and Iam a senior orthopaedics surgeon.

This review is from: Handbook of Fractures (Paperback)
I wanted to sing the praises of this book even though I haven't finished reading the entire thing yet. At the level of a 4th year medical student, this book is very understandable. It provides quick bits of information on almost all types of fractures and even includes a couple chapters that have very relevant bits of information, like a chapter on pain management. It really comes in most handy while on the trauma services, and I generally see most of the new interns carrying it around in their pocket. I have very frequently referenced its pages when trying to figure out how to fix a fracture, and its bullet point style makes it very easy to check specific points. Memorizing one chapter on a specific type of fracture will make you competent enough to know how to manage a fracture. Senior residents may find this book to be too simple, but for the beginner to orthopaedics, this is a valuable pocket manual that really is used more like a primary source. I highly recommend this book if you are going to rotate on a trauma service and want to impress someone.
