5.0 out of 5 stars Norms and Grants, November 4, 2005
This review is from: Handbook of Indulgences (Library Binding)
This edition is written in English and is the result of the efforts of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States, which was first, published in 1988. This is the Third Edition of the Handbook of Indulgences.

This book explains Norms and Indulgences. It the book explains and lists the three general types of Indulged Grants and the other type of Indulgenced Grants. With this book you will learn exactly what is required to receive a partial indulgence or plenary indulgence. All the prayers that grant indulgences are listed.

The book is easy to read and use. And is well documented. If you are Roman Catholic this is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need, May 19, 2008

This is a wonderful book. It may have been meant more for clergy even though most of the prayers are for personal benefit. The reason I say it may be more for the clergy is this book greatly details what an indulgence is and the conditions surrounding it. But it is full of information and prayers for lay people also. For example, did you know that just by making a proper Sign of the Cross (In the Name of the Father...) there is an indulgence attached to it? I myself tried to plow through all the "rules" but finally went right to the prayers. All in all, it is an excellent resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for spiritual growth, July 18, 2005

This review is from: Handbook of Indulgences (Library Binding)

This book is very good to have in ones home. The Litany's alone are worth the price of this book. Being a practicing Catholic means you must continue to grow spiritually. Jesus Christ is the Catholic Church. He is present there. Not on some mountain. If you ever want to see what your really made of, sit in the confession line, then you'll know.{If you've been away for a long time, go to confession, repent and give your sins to Jesus, and you'll feel great. Then stay close to him.} There are many prayers, Rosary's, Chaplets, medals, scapulars...old prayers of Saints which will help you. Many you can find right on line. Read up on Mary...fatima, Lourdes and La Salette, and you may be enlightened. Call on Jesus Christ humbly and he'll find you. Then go to a Basilica or a Shrine.

Buy it and do the prayers. You are missing out on a lot of grace if you don't. Enough said.

An approved English translation of the current, fourth edition Enchiridion indulgentiarum (1999) is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops under the title "Manual of Indulgences". You might find that edition a better item to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!, February 18, 2011
This review is from: Handbook of Indulgences (Library Binding)
This book shipped and arrived VERY fast. It's also in great condition. I'm very pleased.

This is a book that EVERY Catholic should have in their home. These simple indulgences help repay our debts back to God. Thus, we can shorten our time in Purgatory right here on Earth. We can also add these special prayers for the dead/ souls in Purgatory, who need them the most.

Please check out this book. It'l change your prayer life. God Bless!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good News for everyone, June 3, 2011

This review is from: Handbook of Indulgences (Library Binding)
This book, Handbook of Indulgences, was an eye opener for me. There is a wealth of information included on the granting of indulgences, something so many of us need in large measure. Admitedly for Roman Catholics, anyone interested in our faith can also gain insights into "what makes us tick". So often the information they have is erroneous to say the least. When you get past your preconceived notions and find out the truth your eyes will be opened too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A No-Frills Work of Catholic Prayer and Their Indulgences., April 15, 2011

This review is from: Handbook of Indulgences (Library Binding)
First of all, don't purchase this book if you're looking for spiritual inspiration. That's not what this book is all about. It's simply a listing of various prayers and actions and what indulgences are given in accordance with the Catholic church. Unfortunately, indulgences are not well understood and are often forgotten about by the faithful. Priests rarely, if ever, discuss indulgences in their homilies or in the confessional so it's paramount that Catholics educate themselves on this most important topic. For those who are still unaware, an indulgence is the full or partial remission of temporal punishment due to sin that has already been forgiven. In other words, even though we are forgiven for sins we've committed, we're still on the hook for punishment, or rather a "purification", in purgatory. Indulgences are prayers or actions that we take that help eliminate the time spent in purgatory for those particular sins. That's where this book comes in. It describes which prayers or actions can be said or done and lets us know, albeit vaguely, how much time can be reduced in purgatory. I say "vaguely" because no one really knows how much time in purgatory God deems necessary to purify ourselves of particular sins. For anyone with a serious Catholic library in their home this book is a must-have. I recommend this book for advanced Catholics and for beginners who have first learned about the purpose and history of indulgences.
