Editorial Reviews

Review

The Yoga Handbook is such a breath of fresh air, finally some one tackles some real topics in regards to teaching yoga. This is more than just the usual information on philosophy and asana variations. Stephanie shares her valuable experience on topics like; setting up your classroom environment, student relations, vocal tone while teaching, adjusting students in postures, reading students bodies, class sequencing, recommended practices for various aliments, and setting up your business. In just a couple hours you can benefit from Stephanie s years of experience as a yoga practitioner and teacher. --~Karen Prior, RYT, Dallas, TX

Dear Stephanie I have been meaning to send you an email for ages - no time!! I purchased your book approx. 18 months ago. To be honest at first I thought the photos and style was very 'home made'. I must apologise for this. I have been on my yoga teacher training course at 'The Life Centre' in London for the last 9 months and since doing the course I have not put your book down. There are so many useful pieces of information in there that I use it most days. I have also recently started up my own classes in the village where I live (I run 3 per week). Again your book has given me numerous variations on class sequencing and also setting up the business of yoga. I would be interested to be on your mailing list for any workshops you intend to run. Once again a big THANK YOU for all your wise advise. Om Shanti --Gill Cawte, Doncaster England

This is a MUST have book for teachers of yoga. Stephanie has managed to crystallize her fabulous teachings into one well-written and succinct text. You have in your hands not merely another of the myriad yoga texts. This wonderful treasure offers much you may not have considered; I actually studied it for an hour to get new ideas for last night's 90 minute class presentation! And here I thought after 900 classes taught I knew what I was doing. Thank you, dear Steph, yet again for helping me along my path. Namaste. --Tom Hamilton, RYT, June 2002 graduate

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have!, March 7, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Yoga Handbook, An Inspirational Reference for Teaching and Home Practice (Spiral-bound)
I am in the process of becoming a certified yoga instructor. I have read plenty of books on yoga, but this is the only one I found that specifically addresses the art of teaching yoga. It is obvious that Stephanie Keach has put a lot of thought into this book - it covers everything a beginning or a seasoned pro may need to know in order to teach yoga safely and professionally. I was very impressed with the amount of information present in this book! There is so much here - ethics of a yoga teacher, the business of yoga, what you need for a basic studio, asanas, meditation, pranayama techniques, anatomy, etc., etc.

This book is the perfect supplement to my training. I thank Ms. Keach for a wise and enlightened book! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in teaching yoga or deepening their own home practice. Well done! Namaste!

5.0 out of 5 stars I attended Stephanies teacher training, and the book was of extreme value, June 16, 2006
This review is from: The Yoga Handbook, An Inspirational Reference for Teaching and Home Practice (Spiral-bound)
My hometown yoga instructor had to have her own copy after viewing mine. She said the book contained 20 years of wealth of knowledge, without sorting thru many volumes of books.

Very specific and very well thought out. Not just for a teacher, for anyone developing a personal practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Yoga: The Big Picture, February 18, 2007
This review is from: The Yoga Handbook, An Inspirational Reference for Teaching and Home Practice (Spiral-bound)
This book is a great overview for yoga teachers, especially those just getting started -- from ethics to class sequencing, basic (70) poses to know, 120 common ailments and recommended practices & contraindications, muscles you need to know, and business considerations (how to charge, how to market, & how to protect yourself).

She offers a wonderful appendix which includes sample liability releases, student questionaires, and expense & record keeping forms. Also, there is an abbreviated Sanskrit glossary of some of the most common poses/phrases & terminology. All of this in the light of integrity, adherence to the yamas & niyamas in your personal and professional life.

If a teacher training course had to use only have one book, this one would come pretty close to fitting the bill. At 238 pages, nothing super in depth obviously, but wow, what a great overview! A definite must for any new (or aspiring) yoga teacher.
